Give road users the discretion to treat red lights like 'Stop' signs and not be forced to wait for a green light if the way ahead is clear.  This approach is adopted in other countries (e.g. the USA where you can turn right on a red light if the road is clear and pedestrians are not crossing).

Why is this idea important?

This would speed up traffic flow, save fuel and hence pollution, and generally reduce frustration among motorists.
