The smoking ban has killed the atmosphere (ie mood) in many pubs and bars, and contributed to the demise of many, too. A lot of the most characterful customers – and the best regulars –  in pubs are smokers. I would therefore like to see certain premises allowed to accomodate smokers: if staff and management smoke themselves, or don't mind smoke, this seems reasonable. I'm not a smoker, but I mourn the atmosphere of pre-ban pubs and wish to see this wonderful British institution restored.

Why is this idea important?

Something in British life has died with the smoking ban as it affects pubs. Pubs are the real 'community centres' for many of us – particularly in rural areas. I therefore think it is important that at least some pubs and bars in the UK are allowed to allow smoking.
