Freeways in town and cities

The design of our towns and cities leaves a lot to be desired when coping with the unforseen traffic levels for when they were designed.   Most 'A' roads are of single lane construction and where the roads widen are often littered with parked vehicles.

A free and easy way to alleviate traffic problems is to ban parking along these 'A' roads which would add to safety and help keep the traffic moving.

It may inconvenience a few motorists but for the greater good it will help solve a problem that can be operated almost overnight at little or no cost.

Speeding up Traffic Flow

One of the biggest daily holdups is that at the Dartford Crossing.   Tolls are collected both Southbound and Northbound.    Why not cancel either of these tolls and instead just double the toll on the other.   This method is already used on the Severn crossing.

Road Sign Confusion

Cut back drastically on the number of road signs that have been grouped together.   As a motorist it is unsafe as well as confusing to read them all and take the necessary action.   A case in point recently was the clutter of signs near Victoria Station where motorists were given tickets for not obeying one of the signs.

A Law to replace Stop and Search

Now that the Stop and Search Law has been abandoned (Jul 2010) there is nothing to tackle the suspicion of terrorists walking the streets.   In times of heightened security the police are powerless to act until after the event when possibly tens of people have been killed or maimed.

Therefore a less intrusive act is necessary.   No innocent likes to be frisked especially because of your colour that you are being targetted.

The idea would be to change that law to 'Stop and Question'.     If the answers do not satisfy the policeman the person could be taken to the station to be further questioned.

Employing the Long Term Unemployed

Currently medium and large companies have to take on a proportion of disabled people.   Why not include the long term unemployed either in this category or in addition to it.

Refuse Collections

Currently our council collects our food waste every week. The container is very large.

Why is it necessary to collect every week when we usually have 2 small bags inside the container.   I know the Mail has had campaigns to collect this weekly but is totally unnecessary especially if users used bags instead of just putting food into a bin.   In fact at a rough calculation we could probably last for 6 months before the bin was filled but larger families could reduce this figure.   There is no smell because of the bags.

No survey has ever been done but maybe heavy users should be charged extra.

Income Tax

Why is it that fraud to do with avoidance of Income Tax of nearly £100bn is 100 times that of the avoidance of VAT which is approx £1bn?

If VAT collection is so successful why can't we use similar methods to collect Income Tax?

Summer of Discontent

The Unions have threatened mass disruption over the coming months.   Why should the taxpayer help prolong these strikes by providing benefits from the public purse.

The law should be changed that NO benefit should be paid either to the striker or his family during the course of the strike whether an official one or not.

Replace benefits with a -ve Income Tax

There are so many benefits handled by so many departments.

The complexity causes fraud on a huge scale.

the -ve income tax could be handled by just one department the Inland Revenue who would be responsible for their delivery.

Changing our Clocks

Rather than discussing what to do about putting the clocks forward or back we should align our clocks with those of our neighbours in Europe giving us more daylight hours.   Scotland should then be free to consider its own destiny.

Motorway Hard Shoulder Exit

Currently you can spend an enormous time sitting in a jam on the motorway when the hard shoulder is clear.   Motorists should be allowed to use the hard shoulder from the 300metre countdown markers to exit the motorway.
