IPCC and CPS Clearly Not Fit For Purpose

Once more, an innocent man has died after being clearly assaulted by the Police (caught on countless cameras), and no action is taken by the IPCC or the CPS, who have dragged their feet to ensure that the officer involved doesn't even face a charge of common assault.  How many more have to die before we see a Police Officer in the dock?  The IPCC are ineffective as they have no real teeth, and the CPS seem very loathe to charge blatantly corrupt and violent Police Officers.  A truly independent body that investigates and decides on charges is now required.

Why is this idea important?

Greater Controls Over Armed Police

I've have just looked at the BBC website at the story regarding the deranged gunman in Northumberland, and I am horrified to see photograph of an armed Police Officer pointing his automatic weapon at an elderly couple while their car is searched.  I fully understand the man they are looking for is very dangerous, but I cannot believe for one minute that this officer genuinely believes these elderly people are about to pull a gun on him.  This a scene reminiscent of a Police state where the Police are using their guns to intimidate the population.

Allow Judges To Dismiss Cases On The Grounds Of Unintended Consequence

This idea is very simple but very powerful, and is to allow judges to dismiss a case on the grounds that the prosecution has come about as an unintended consequence of a law.  In their haste to rush through as many laws as possible, the previous Labour Government has left us a legacy of badly drafted legislation which makes it far too easy for innocent and unwary citizens to become victims of laws that were intended to prevent terrorism, illegal immigration and anti-social behaviour.
