Street And Road Clutter To Be Removed. Thank You Eric Pickles.

The environment – packaging

Reduce significantly the amount of non recyclable plastic packaging, used in the food industry particularly, by several means:

*   ensure that all "one-time" shopping bags are recyclable – i.e. paper or recyclable plastic

*   phase out all one-time plastic bags; whilst the usage reduction from 60 to 40 billion a year over the last two is significant it still means we will put 40 billion bags into the ground still this year

*   phase in the use of paper bags

*   require that both plastic bottles AND their tops are of the same recyclable material. The lids on the plastic milk bottles are recyclable whilst those on the soda bottles are not! If they were, one could flatten the plastic bottle, put on the cap and than discard thus reducing the volume by about 70%

*   invest in power plants which use packaging and other rubbish as their fuel

Motorway congestion

Police Patrols should issue fixed penalty notices to drivers who fail to obey the Highway Code by driving on the left except when overtaking. Basically, if there is a gap in front of you then you should be safely moving to the left.

Ban lorries from lane 2 on dual carriageways and both outside lanes on motorways. Make the minimum speed for cars and other vehicles that can use motorways the same as the maximum speed for lorries.

Remind van drivers that their speed limit is 60mph and therefore should be banned from lane 3 on 3 lane moroways.

Variable speed restictions work to increase FLOW of traffic, so would minimum speed at certain times of the day

If vehicles cannot maintain this minimum speed, even uphill, then they should be banned during certain busy periods.

Speed Limits

Abolish them all, accept that some people are better able to drive carefully at whatever speed than others, the only time when people need to get points on their licence is when their driving could be argued to constitute a risk to other road users.

Turn off the talking trains, train stations and buses

For the past two years or so we have been forced to suffer a womans voice telling us from a satellite (I believe…?)  in space the same boring, intrusive messages about the stops or stations we are approaching, the final destination of the public vehicle which we are sitting down. Even while we wait for trains a man's voice tells us not to leave luggage on platforms, etc, etc. It's too much. When I recently went to Lymington, the lovely old fashioned train rendered a silent journey but the new train with un openable doors which requires the employment of an extra guard to open and close the doors has the ruddy female voice on it. There's too MUCH noise telling us to do this and not to do that. Its like the Nanny State via the invisible faceless voice. Do we really need this? Apart from the unnecessary noise it intrudes constantly upon our thoughts and right to peace and quiet .

Enlarge the small print that no-one can read

Make it illegal for manufacturers to list their ingredients and instructions in ultra small print that even people with optimum vision cannot read.

Print on packaging has become smaller and smaller over the years so that now it is quite often little more than an unintelligible fuzz.

For people who have to avoid certain ingredients and additives due to personal choice, dietary requirements etc it is becoming increasingly difficult to see the important information they need when the print is far too small.

I feel that is every citizen's right to know what they are purchasing, and think this is an issue of civil liberty because we all need to have the freedom of choice to find out what is in the item we are buying and we need to know how to safely follow the instructions on a product and be able to see those instructions clearly, but it is often impossible to even see the relevant information one needs.

Please introduce a minimum standard size on how small the small print can be.

Stop the Propaganda in school history lessons

For the majority of people under 25 their history lessons at school seem to have consisted mainly about learning about the second world war and about the evils of Nazi-ism.

Stop teaching our children that history is nazi-ism and that our national identity comes from winning world war 2.

While this may not seem like a civil liberties issue at first, it's laying the foundations for an errosion of our civil liberties.  If our children are only ever taught about their identity in terms of what they're not – ie "What does being British mean to you?" "It means fighting the nazis and winning world war 2", it means they will never have a full sense of what it means to be British in a positive way.  All the positive aspects of our history – our part in the industrial revolution, our lack of religious wars, our expertise in trade and discovery, our openness to new ideas from the places we travelled to – all of this disappears into the simple fact that we were on the winning side in a war.  And if we as a country have no sense of our national identity, no sense of who are are, then it is so much easier for a government to tell us who we are – who they want us to be.

In addition, education about World War 2 is framed in terms of Good (Us) and Evil (Them), and Hitler and his regime are demonise to such an extent that children believe that there is no subtlety to evil – that evil is easy to recognise and easy to avoid.  If no-one accepts that there was a seductive and rational side to Hitler's policies, then how can we ever learn the lessons of history?  The next evil dictator may be just around the corner – he (or she) may be telling us that we need to increase police power for our own protection, that we need to lock terrorist suspects up for our own protection, that we need to shoot innocent people for our own protection, that we need to disenfranchise poorer elements of the population for our own protection – and because they keep giving us money we're happy to go along with it, because our history lessons have shown us that evil is obvious and evil never as any good to it.

I'm not saying that any of this has already happened, but I'm saying that if we never teach children the history of our country beyond WW2 and never teach them a pride in that history, then we are opening ourselves up to this kind of manipulation.

The EU,taxing, insuring and mot-ing a vehicle in any country ?

Hello,As a long term Motorhomer/campervan user i have noticed maybe a loop hole or unworkable/unfair use of our individual countries motor taxes etc.

I'm not sure if i can explain properly,i hope you understand what i'm trying to convey, but for instance,we are ALL  EU citizens now, apparantly all abide by the same rules and regs,my country the UK ,has certain rules and regs regardings vehicles, stating we need an MOT every year, road TAX  for use of the roads and a valid INSURANCE,paid yearly and also valid for that time,as far as i'm aware,so do all the other EU countries…

So,my point is,if i am away from the UK,and my Insurance/MOTor Tax runs out,I am in fact breaking the law,not only in the UK (and i'm not there, maybe in Spain at the time) or the EU law.

Why cant EU road users be classed the same, and for their convenience be able to recieve and purchase these documents ,ANYWHERE in the EU,as an example,i overstayed a long holiday while travelling Europe,i had to stop said holiday when noticing documents about to expire ! thus a long rushed 2000 mile journey back to the UK,to get the out dated TAX,that i hadn't or wouldn't have used (as being out of the country for 6 months !) an MOT,where as ANY qualified mot station in the EU could have made sure my vehicle was safe (as thats what its for) and that INSURANCE be purchased in any insurance broker (online or in that particular EU country )  as for instance,a Bulgarian can get EU cover insurance with even added perks of a green card that allows him  a greater number of countries of cover,it also covers him for the UK !! but the same Bulgarian/Spanish/Italian would have the same problem as myself and have to travel the 1000/2000 miles back to their country of origin,to be lawfull again, which seems in this computer ,open borders EU countries, rather ludicrous.

Can anyone see my point  ? please make a comment, and any Govt official, please look into this, before someone takes it to a tribunal/law courts …from a EU road user, with rights ???

Get rid of laws which specify what is dangerous driving

Dangerous driving should be punished because it is dangerous.  People should not be punished for, for example, driving while talking on a mobile phone.  It is only a problem if it is dangerous in which case there is already a law for it and no need for all these specific laws and crimes.

Restoration of sense to Highway Code

The Highway Code used to mostly say what was considered safe etc on a road and had very few 'MUST' or 'MUST NOT's in it.

This meant that drivers were not immediately breaking the law for doing something which, in their particular circumstances, was sensible even necessary but is illegal.

Fisheries Protection

The Angling is very much forgotten and overlooked, there is mass predation of inland water fish stocks by vermin such as otters and cormorants. There we suggest giving the inland, (canal, river, lake or still water) fisheries owners or managers the right to protect there business by allowing them to humanely destroy these nuicance vermin who decimate stocks and threatens business's, sport, social meetings and more that happen at there premises. We propose that this should be done right away to protect the future of Angling, which is at least one sport where our teams and players get gold yearly.

Fishery owners and managers regularly make massive undertakings to ensure wildlife habbitat is protected and encouraged. If fisheries become to much infested by these vermin then they risk going out of business, thus allowing the habitats to desist.

unfair references

If someone is accused of something and totally exonerated, the accusation still has to go on their reference.  This is particularly unfair for teachers, as at least one school invents unfair and totally invented allegations against a teacher who, for example, has uncovered and exposed cheating or creative accounting, and who they wish to  get rid of.  It is so easy for both other staff and students to invent allegations against teachers.  These invented allegations wreck a teacher's life and career.  It is also unfair that the teacher is usually suspended, and the allegation published, but the student is never called to account.

Bring the American ideal of the student athletics here.

Make it compulsorary for schools to provide extra ciricular sports programs with constructive training programs run by suitably qualified coaches, and competative fixtures against other local schools. The cost being covered by goverment but hopefully supported by sponsorship from buisness.

Obviously the size of the school would dictate what would be appropriate to provide, a small village school would struggle to put together a football team but the large schools in our towns and citys should be able to provide a range of team sports and athletics for puplis to train and compete in.

End speeding through hamlets and villages

To stop people speeding through hamlets and villages and endangering the lives of our children and pets a 30 mile an hour limit should be imposed when passing the name at the beginning and end of these residential neighbourhoods.  This is the rule in France and, from experience, drivers do slow down.

Faith Schools

Maintained status should be removed from all faith schools.  It is offensive to a great many taxpayers that they should be subsidising the religious and cultural separation of our children in school.  Have politicians not learnt anything from Northern Ireland et al?

That our nature reserves and environment is recognised for the value and importance that it is worth. Properly elected governments.

Properly elected, democratic governance would be a start!  Political education of the masses ~ far too many of the people of this country are ignorant in relation to politics.

Our governments don't listen to those who they represent…oops, actually they do.  They just ignore the majority of the British public.  I am sickened by the return to Thatcherite rhetoric and policies, albeit dressed up in ways that are aimed to soften the blow of the old iron fist.

Does anyone on this forum really believe that their ideas and views will make any difference at all to governmental policies?  Wake up! It's merely a sop to bamboozle people!

remove many of the road signs – they clutter & cost

Isn't it time we stopped putting up so many road signs/traffic lights and painting the roads in multi colours ?

The cost and the clutter is something we could do without

SIGNS

How much does it cost to put up each sign – surely if you are driving against the law, you should expect that you may get caught.  In London there are thousands of signs, the 2 most popular are highlightling :-

1- speed cameras – drive in the law and you will not have anything to worry about

2 – Bus lane – why are they not all just Monday – Fri  (AM/PM) rush hours and a sign put up if they include more than that ?

By taking down signs drivers will concentrate more on the road/being safe.

PAINTING ROADS

Its not just the initial paint cost, its the maintenance cost as well. Cycle lanes, bus lanes, speed limits etc etc etc

Why do we need them – does it make us safer and add anything ? Lets go radical and make everything simple again

TRAFFIC LIGHTS

there are too many and many could be turned off from 9pm – 6am, saving elecricity and getting drivers to take more care.

Rethink the rod licence

At the moment you require a rod licence to fish on private land.

I think it's somewhat counter-intuitive that someone can buy land, fill it with water, stock it with fish, look after those fish but then have to pay a rod licence to the environment agency if they or a member of their club fish in it.

At the end of the day I don't think anyone should be fined £2500 and treated like a criminal if they are fishing on stillwaters on private land without a licence.

I believe, as do many others, that the rod licence should be limited to public stillwaters, flowing waterways and canals.

Speed Bumps

In so many ways these are ineffective, expensive and dangerous and if anybody in a traffic department had back problems they would never go for this idea, even if there were many other pluses (which there aren't). In council offices people would be out of a job if they didn't think up another (expensive) scheme to add to the rest. The result is speed bumps and a growing accretion of signs which confuse and distract. At Village Way, Rayners Lane I counted 32 metal posts defacing what was once a lovely mock Tudor road. Get rid of the bumps and the clutter.
