The CRB is a large organisation/quango which is expensive to run and maintain and, in some instances, a burden on the tax payer.

Why is this idea important?

I believe that CRB type checks are necessary but are not beyond the resources of the police. Local police could carryout the checks needed by local people and the revenue used locally to pay for the service (with the current exceptions for the voluntary sector).

I feel this would give easier access to checks for eveyone and reduce the admin burden for many organisations (particulalry those in the voluntary sector who have to employ staff solely for this purpose – the money could be better used elsewhere) and time delays currently being experienced. Whereas one or two people at each police station working from a single office could provide a far better and more efficient service – even immediate checks for a slightly higher fee where they are needed urgently.
