Currently, employees can leave a job at any time, for any reason, after giving notice. Whereas employers wishing to part company with an employee must go either the redundancy or dismissal route. For high skilled workers, employers should be allowed a 'no fault' termination as exists in the US – lower skilled workers certainly need the protection offered by existing legislation, but for high skilled workers – who can easily find new work – there is a clear disparity between employer and employee rights.

Why is this idea important?

SMB's are reluctant to take on additional hires because of this disparity. If it were easier and less expensive to get rid of employees who simply don't work out – without either the fraught and adversarial dismissal process, or costly & inflexible redundancy – UK startups relying on skilled workers would be more competitive against US firms.
