The time is perhaps right to consider charging foreign vehicles entering the UK a temporary excise duty for using our roads. In many European countries revenue is raised by imposing toll charges at regular intervals on motorways and in those that do not use this practice, drivers purchase a temporary pass which is displayed on the windscrean. This would also remove the need for introducing toll charges in the UK (often discussed)  which the general public here are really set against.

Why is this idea important?

Foreigh vehicles use our roads but make no contribution what so ever to the up-keep.

There is a real potential for generating substantial revenue to supliment the rising cost of transport maintenance costs.
