There are efforts to get more women, ethnic minority and disabled MPs. All of these things are beyond the control of the person involved. i.e. you do not choose your gender, ethnicity or physical ability. So why is there no push to get more people from disadvantaged backgrounds?

Why is this idea important?

I keep hearing about the need for balance in the House of Commons. I agree that it is important to get a fully representative house, but unless there are more people who come from council estates, have no Oxbridge education and are not professionals (Doctors, lawyers etc) we will never have that balance. The vast majority of the population are not represented because of the financial position they were born into. Their education is statistically of  a lower standard and their life expectancy is lower. Maybe this is one way to redress that balance.
