This is important in the restoration of civil liberties and to limit the excessive powers of the police. It is also important to ensure that people have a fair trial with qualified legal representation
It is wrong that the police should be able to act as Judge, Jury and executioner. The ability to hand out 'on the spot fines' for trivial issues becomes a mockery that the police are unable to police themselves. I would not, for one second, suggest that the police would abuse this power, but 'quis custodiet ipsos custodes'. Additionally to that, this country was founded on the suggestion of trial by jury and innocent until proven guilty, both of which have been removed over the past couple of years. You are now, in many cases, guilty until proved innocent and if you end up in court the probability is that you are unlikely to even be prosecuted by a lawyer (or defended by one in the case of legal aid) and many are now being served in court by legal aides and not people who are actually qualified to do so. This is something that HAS to stop immediately.
