Britain should either lobby the EU to reform Regulation 261 or provide an opt-out for British registered airlines.

Why is this idea important?

It is a ridiculous law whereby airlines have to fund passengers food and hotel costs for delays outside of their control – such as during the ash cloud crisis when airspace was closed and airlines were not allowed to fly even if they could. This has cost airlines millions of pounds and it is only airlines that are forced to pay through this shoddy regulation – train companies such as Eurostar when they had issues were not forced to pay and even some insurance companies were not liable to pay out over the ash cloud crisis. This nonsensical law needs to be repealed or at the very least Britain needs an opt-out from this ridiculous EU dictat.
