My local authority has begun a more robust recycling system than previous, whereby certain plastics, metal, paper, cardboard and glass are collected at the kerbside.
Unfortunately, there are many plastics that they will not collect, namely plastic film, black plastic food containers, plastic strawberry punnet type containers and others.
My suggestion to the Coalition would be to place the onus (by regulation or other) for food manufacturers to only use the same type of plastic containers which CAN be recycled.
Why is this idea important?
There are far too many types of plastic and if there were one standard then recycling of these could be far easier, resulting in less waste going to landfill, with the knock-on effect of ultimately less CO2 emissions into the environment.
I know the purpose of this exercise is to reduce unnecessary bureacracy, but I feel that the importance of this issue cannot be ignored.
