I nearly said "no place in govenment", but of course the one duty government has is to safeguard anyone's right to practice a religion of their choosing, if they have come to that decision as a thinking person, no matter how misguided. Hence no organised worship in schools, and certainly no dubious moral dogmaticism in policy making.

Why is this idea important?

At present the proliferation of faith schools is undermining the UK's potentially tolerant attitude towards multiculturalism. All children should be taught in a secular environment, leaving religious practice to the home where it is a private matter. We need an education system where comparative religion is taught perhaps under a wider ranging banner of ethics. Humanism and science are far more important. To think that creationism is in danger of being taught as an alternative to evolution just to satisfy some of the more credulous and ill-educated members of society, is horrific.
