The idea
Allow ALL mothers to attend post natal groups being run through the local authority. At my local medical centre there are the following groups:
- Young mothers (under 20) – I am 33
- Single mothers – I am married
- Mothers receiving benefits – before going onto maternity leave I was in full time employment.
The only opportunity that I have to meet and socialise with other new mothers is during the weekly weighing session.
Why is it important?
The group of mothers most likely to suffer from post natal depression are those who have previously been in full time employment as it is such a shock to the system. Why are these mothers not able to meet socially to discuss the ups and downs of being a new mum? "A problem shared is a problem halved."
