Most individuals and organisations dare not attempt to use these laws for fear of financial ruin. What is more, those that have the resources are as likely to use these laws to suppress the truth as to defend themselves against damaging lies. Scientific debate can be stifled, corruption hidden and freedom of speech undermined. It is also the case that the United Kingdom is being made a world centre for attempts to suppress publications of all sorts in all parts of the world. Repressive and corrupt foreign governments are now using the English courts to attack their enemies.
The laws on libel and slander can only be used by individuals and organisations with large financial resources. They should be repealed.
