To buy vehicle number plates, the purchaser must present ID and proof of entitlement. The retailer then has to keep records and can be visited by police/ DVLA / trading standards to inspect these records. This was supposed to stop criminals obtaining false number plates. This does not work as criminals can order them from Eire or the Channel Islands via the internet, they can buy number plate making equipment on internet auction sites or they can even remove them from parked cars as they are either stuck on or can be removed with a screwdriver.

Why is this idea important?

This is clearly useless legislation which only serves to make the retailers and purchasers life more difficult and loses sales. Criminals have no problem obtaining false plates so why does it exist?
