Repeal the 1871 Dogs Act

This year I was taken to the Magistrates Court by the police for my pet dog killing a cat.  Unfortunately my dog had killed my neighbours cat, which was very upsetting for us all.  I apologised to my neighbour but the police still insisted on taking me to court.

My dog is not listed as a dangerous dog as he is a Siberian Husky.  He loves people including children and has no sign of aggresion towards any human.  I am convinced that he is not the first dog to kill a cat and will undoubtly not be the last.

In taking me to Court was in my mind a complete waste of taxpayer's money and police time.  I must question whether they will be taking cat owners to court next for killing a mouse?

Why is it important?

As a teacher, this is now displayed on my CRB disclosure for my employer to view.  In addition this case was sent to the General Teaching Council where they had to decide whether to 'strick me off' as a teacher.  Thankfully they have decided not to do so but have given me a warning that a further incident they would not be seen so leniently.  What has the incident of my dog got to do with teaching children?  I do not take my dog into the classroom with me?

I am aware that there is a desperate need for good dog ownership to ensure that dogs are not breed for illegal purposes.  This I totally agree and accept with.  However, surely common sense must prevail.

Thank you

Sarah Farrell
