Although student loan fees are deducted from my salary on a monthly basis, I also have to pay a second payment direct to the tax man. This is because I completed a self assessment tax return form for some additional private work I did marking exams. When I queried why I had to pay twice, I was told the Government can opt to take payments out of one or both. I was informed you can be taken to court if you do not comply.
This method of repayment is very unfair and leads to considerable hardship for some people. In addition I will have overpaid my student loan but cannot claim the money back from the student loan company until the end of the financial year.
