Scrap our system of planning permission
The entire system of planning permission and development control should be scrapped and replaced by a simple majority vote. All residents and business within a certain radius of a proposal would have a say, the larger the proposal the larger the radius.
Why does this idea matter?
Our current system of development control is vastly expensive, terribly slow and completely unnaccountable. The decisions it inflicts in the population bear no relation to the will of the majority.
How often has a supermarket proposal been approved despite overwhelming local opposition?
How often is a householder denied the chance to make simple alterations to his home because the planning officers do not approve of his taste.
These are not decisions to be made by remote unconnected public servants, these choices should be made by the people whose lives are affected.
Both democracy and thrift can be served by scapping the whole system
