Maternity leave is important as it helps women to achieve equally in the workplace. It ensures women are not disadvantaged when interupting their career to have children. Statutory maternity leave ensures a woman can be confident that she can return to her job.
Men do not suffer this disadvantage, so there is no need for statutory paternity leave. Neither is it necessary for both parents to be contantly present during the early months of a child's life. If a man feels that he needs to take time off work when he becomes a father he should take annual holiday, or unpaid leave.
This reduces the burden on employers and colleagues.
