Giving women special representation within government whilst ignoring the equality issues for men promotes and institutionalises gender bias at the heart of government. Equality should not be a one way street reserved for only half of the population.
Theresa May is, amongst other things, Minister for Women and Equalities. Women are not a victimised minority in need of special representation. Whilst there are areas of life where women may be disadvantaged there are also areas of life where men are disadvantaged – for example education, life expectancy, health care and family law. Giving half of the population special representation and ignoring the other half does not promote equality but rather engenders inequality.
