Double yellow lines for parking and double yellow dashes for loading – are there really any places in the country with differences between the duration of parking and loading restrictions? If so, does anyone really pay any attention to the loading restrictions? They look at the line if it is double, then it means no stopping, and single means you can stop for 5 minutes outside the active time. Think how much paint you will save if you don’t paint dashes on the kerb every 6 feet or so. And think how much you can save if you replace the double yellow with a single line of a different colour. And think how much more you will save if you paint the lines half as wide.
Bus lanes with thick lines between them and the carriageway? Why not make them the normal width but solid? Every time a bus lane restarts, it has a new sign – that means every time there is a break for a junction or other access point. Why? Do we really need to have signs on the roads approaching every bus lane telling drivers that there is a bus lane on the road then are approaching, and do the signs need to be on their own pole about 2 feet away from the pole that tells people that the double yellow line and double yellow dash means no parking and no stopping at any time. Of course not.
Marked parking bays have large lettering saying useful things like “Residents Parking Only” but they are repeated every few feet. It is really necessary to have the markings so often and so large?
Give way markings – why are the lines so thick and why do we need to have so many lines on the approach? Do we really need every junction marked in every residential street showing who has right of way? The Americans seem to be able to treat residential junctions as multi-directional give ways without the need for acres of paint.
It goes on forever, and the cost of implementation and maintenance must be astronomical.
