Let Councillors Have Opinions

If an elected councillor states that they think a proposed local development is bad for the area, the council solicitor jumps in and stops them voting on it.

If someone is elected on a particular platform – keep the local school open, support a bypass, support/oppose building flats, oppose airport expansion – and gets elected they are banned from voting on it!

Luncay!

But the law says councillors must approach each vote with an open mind, so a councillor with a (seemingly) pre-determined position is disqualified or the vote can be challenged.

Politics is based on policy, but anyone with a policy cannot vote!

Change the law so that:

Councillors for a specific affected area CAN have a pre-stated opinion.

Councillors outside the area should not, but are allowed to make biassed comments PROVIDED they are prepared to listen to arguments on both sides and allow the possibility that they may be persauded the other way.

Bring back darkness at night and limit the use of council orange-glow street lighting

There is too much night light now. The old fashioned lamps were good enough and did not shine through window curtains keeping people awake. They are hideous, too tall and better on motorways and busy 24 hour traffic roads. Bring back the old, graceful lamp lights. The present ones use too much electricity, kill trees, which need to emit carbon and take in oxygen. This doesnt help with the global warning problem. Also, what about the trees and the wild birds? The big beautiful tree near me which has a new lamp under its branches, is dying. There are a few big lamps around where I live. They shine in my windows forcing me to wear an eye mask at night and other people I know have said that they shine in their windows and, unless they use something like a war blackout curtain cant keep the glaring light out! Is this really necessary? How wonderful it was for me to stay by a truly remote Cornish beach earlier in the year and open my window at night upon TRUE darkness again!! Let night BE night as it was once. There is too much artificial light everywhere now, especially in the cities. 24 hour lighting is not Eco – friendly.

Common Sense Councils

Stop councils from harrassing pet owners who have put up posters locally to find a lost pet.

Many councils will demand that these posters are taken down as they are vandalism.

This is absurd and the definition of vandalism should be changed, with local people being able to decide what is acceptable on their streets and what is not.

end the ‘right to buy’ council housing

At a time when social housing is in desperate and increasing demand it is nonsense to continue this misguided Thatcherite policy. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't full of loopholes, but the right to buy provisions are open wide to misuse and social housing continues to be lost to the detriment both of the taxpayer and those most genuinely in need of social housing; and to the advantage of the wealthy and greedy individuals who abuse these provisions.

Dog control? be concise or remove the restricting laws.

The control of dogs needs a big overhaul to be fairer to all owners/lovers and the general public.

I've done a quick search and read all dog related ideas todate Micro chipping, good idea, better enforcement on those who do not clean up after their dogs, good idea, and other bits need better clarification etc.

But no one has mentioned removing the local by-laws on how many dogs you can take for a walk at the same time, some councils have no such law others have set limits, i.e it's recommended 6 should be the limit, our council says 4 is the limit other councils have different limits.

It should be removed or at least made the same throughout the country. The responsible owners should know how many they can control at once and under what conditions etc.

i.e  a quick out to relieve themselves or a walk in a crowded city centre to a walk over the Moors are they small dogs or large dogs? are they docile or playful or aggressive dogs are they in season etc etc etc  one law should not cover all variables which is why it should be the owners choice and they should be held fully accountable for their dogs actions.

So please remove or make it the same so that if you move from one council area to another the dogs do not suffer.  i.e they don't go on as many walks or get as much exercise as they did as the trips have to be doubled or trebled hence walks are shorter due to the time it takes or they have to be kept in all day as they can't all be taken out together.

Stop councils spending money on pointless projects

Councils should submit a business case to central government, or perhaps to local residents in order to get the approval for projects which they wish to go ahead with.

For instance – In crosby, Liverpool the Council has just spent thousands installing speed humps all along a main road (Brownmoor Lane, Crosby) when the raod itsself is in disrepear. Why not speand the money on fixing the road (which has enough pot holes and bumps in it to deter those who want to speed anyway) from speeding!

Ombudsman given powers to investigate housing associations

I think ombudman should be given the same powers to investige housing associations and other quango.s as they have to investigate maladministration or illegal activity ,   for  local authorities . If  you live in a housing association property and your service charge suddenly rises more than a hundred percent in one year, you suspect that some thing is not right, possible some thing illegal going on ,who can you turn to ,to check these are bodies acting legally , who are they accountable to?

Cost Saving Ideas

Our current local authority provides both in-house and, would you believe it? – training for free to all private sector companies for social and adult care services.  This should not be something that the local authority offers for free – we can't afford it as a country and its not their job !!!

They also hold regular meetings (in fact you could be at a local authority meeting within social care every day of the week) and these are usually held at top class expensive hotels with free lunch (which will be paid for in advance and most people leave early and don't take it).  This is hardly a "low cost to operate" approach – it screams money wasting to me

Prohibit Councils From Applying Blanket Alchol Bans

The Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 allows councils to designate areas in which drinking alcohol in public is not a crime, but in which an offence is committed by refusing to cease drinking or refusing to surrender alcohol if requested by a police officer.

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2001/ukpga_20010016_en_2#pt1-ch2-pb1-l1g12

However, several councils have abused this by labelling their entire territories as 'designated areas'.

The Act should be amended to ensure only legitimate hotspots are covered and that councils are limited both in the nature and size of the areas they can 'designate'.

In addition, the Act should be reviewed with a view to safeguarding civil liberties.

Breaching the Data Protection Act.

As a Council resident,I have been the victim of the Breaching of the Data Protection Act by a Council Worker in October 2009.

I complained to the Council and a process of enquiry was apparently gone through, but as this was all determined by the Council involved I lost of course even though there was a witness who heard every word this person stated and wrote to the Council confirming it.

This was thrown out because the "witness" made himself invisible to the worker and myself.Even in a Court of Law this is Fact, that a witness doesn't have to be visible to anyone to confirm what he had heard,so what is the difference?

8 Months on and have just discovered that the Council worker has been Promoted, while I am still suffering from this personal insult.

I will fight on of course, but if a Government Body has a Complaint against it,then investigations should be carried out by a Neutral Party/Parties and not an internal investigation!

Yes,I went to the Ombudsman and that was a complete waste of time because all she read was what the Council had written, and came back as "Inconclusive"!

Data Protection means exactly what it say's,and yet a Deputy Area Manager gets off scott free and gets a Promotion for her trouble.

As pensioners,we cannot afford to get this to Court,so maybe you should amend the DPA to protect the innocents who have worked all their lives.

According to the Council, there is NO DATA TRAIL with Saffron,so time to make sure that there is a Data Trail in the very near future.

After all, anyone can get access to anyone's records which are Private and Confidential apparently.

Cut out the middle men making decisions in the council

When funding is given to the Council to diseminate down.  Why does it have to go through so many departments before it gets to the on the ground workers.

Money comes in Department One (several workers all on high wages) pays a consultant to check where its going to be used.  Consultant is very expensive, He takes it to department two (several highly aid workers) that checks something else at a cost.  By the time they have all had cuts the on the ground workers are left with a mere shadow of the original funding.

Regulate these departments are they actually needed?

Drastically reduce or remove council tax

The introduction of council tax wasnt popular and i think we can all see why..

Every month we have to pay rent/mortgage at inflated prices, gas, electricity, water, phone, broadband, car tax, car insurance, road tax, tv license, and council tax.

the only reason i work is to not go to prison for unpaid bills and even still, i cant afford to live properly because of the ridiculous amounts of tax and forced things we have to pay for.

everything should be pay as you use.

We never get a voice. we never get a say and we are always ignored

tv license is to pay for BBC – if i watch itv or sky (which also costs money) i still have to buy a license tio support a station i dont watch or its a fine. so i have to buy a tv, pay for electric, buy a license, pay for sky and not watch bbc whilst still paying for it.

Bailiffs are another example of being let down by the government, money i have never owed, yet a bailiff turns up and bullys, harrasses and threatens innocent people – ask them if they can prove it, they say no and they dont have to and ruin your life.

council tax – my bins are never collected, i dont use the police or ambulance or fire or the council. if i did, id rather pay as i went (every one call i pay a months equivalent of council tax)

I pay the council and yet, they wont fix the pot holes, they dont clean the streets, they wont fix the lighting, or answer their phones.

Where else have we been ignored? Passports, i paid an inflated price to fund the id card scheme, which is scrapped, yet i bet the passport price doesnt get reduced? or a refund on the difference offered? or a refund to people with id cards?

We live to work to pay people and get nothing in return.

My bank…lloyds tsb..bailed out by tax payers money, i ask for a temporary 100 pound overdraft and i am told no because i am a financial risk?? yet my money – that i have no choice about where it goes – saved them.. helpful banking they promised me, yet refuses me overdraft or if i go 4p over drawn charges me £40 and says they cant stop the charge, which is unfair and the government have done nothing about.

You mighht read these, but nothing of use will ever been done, and we are destined to continue to live to line your pockets and have no life of our own.

Stop Local Councils passing on personal data and reduce the amount of personal data that they are allowed to hold.

DFG means testing should be fair

The Disabled Facilities Grant means testing for working disabled people in Central Bedfordshire only looks at household income and does not take into account household outgoings. Means testing that does not test your means? Ludicrous and totally unfair!

Remove councils’ right to tax roadside parking

This is another stealth tax.  Parking should not be allowed where it is dangerous or obstructs the flow of traffic.  Other than that it should be freely available.  There is no reason why greedy councils should be entitled to charge for parking in an ever-increasing number of roads throughout the UK.

Public sector pay linking

Very simple really, link all public sector pay rises to MP's pay rises.

If they vote themselves 5% all other public sector workers get 5%, no ifs, no buts and no exceptions.

Why should MP's be allowed to treat themselves as a special class of people that are not subject to the same rules and regulations as everybody else?

It's fair.

It's easy to understand.

Give the community back to the community we do not want the council telling us what to do with our area

Hi,

We live in a lovely area with 1 green field where the children play and we walk dogs and we have a football team play here and we hold summer festivals and use it for so much more, so tell me why it that the council can just decide to bully us and try to build a school on it ( BSF ) and not listen to anyone in the local community. I would like it known that we should have a say on what goes on in our area. We run a residents association and we try to make it a better place to live but the council really do not understand what we want ( but i'm sure you have heard all about stoke on trent council by now ).

Thanks

Housing, Benefits & Jobs

Having had the misfortune of being made redundant through ill health last November and also being made homeless for part of this year, I have had to hunt high and low for somewhere to live and it has been far from being easy!

The biggest problem with being unemployed, is the simple fact that a great many landlords do not accept DSS tenants. Look at most adverts for property that is available to rent and you will see the words NO DSS attached to the end of the advert.

Having researched the problem myself, I have discovered that there is a serious level of discrimination towards those who are unfortunate enough to have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

Your government may be looking to cut benefits in order to reduce the national debt, but for someone like myself who is desperate to get back in to work and also done their damned hardest to get off the street, benefits are vital until new employment can be found. By councils delaying benefits or constantly messing people around, they are adding even more stress to what is already a difficult time.

Yes, the benefits system needs a re-think and yes, there are people who abuse it, but there are a hell of a lot of people who need it, that are struggling to survive!

I am on Job Seekers Allowance of £65 per week. £7.65 per week  is deducted from that because I had no choice except to apply for a Social Fund Loan in order to be able to get the house I am now living in. This leaves me with just over £57 a week to survive on. Once I pay for electric, gas and food, I am left with virtually nothing. I do not own a television and even if I did, I would not be able to afford a licence! I have no car, and yet again if I did, I could not afford to run it!

What I am asking is that the government start to look at the reasons why the people on DSS are struggling to find employment…. is it because of a lack of jobs? A lack of skills? There could be any number of reasons.

In my particular case, I was made redundant through ill health last year, since making a recovery, I have applied for over 180 jobs since March this year. Out of the 180 jobs I have applied for, I have had exactly 8 letters telling me I was not suitable for the position or was not qualified enough and I have been asked to one (1) interview! The rest I have not heard anything from! So as a part of looking at the reasons why people are struggling to find employment, look at the jobs which are being advertised!

I have been registered with Jobs Today, Monster and several other websites. Since registering, I have checked them daily and all I see is a repeat of the same adverts by the same companies with very little difference elsewhere. Many of these companies when you read their adverts often talk about career prospects within the company and how you can advance through the ranks. If this is the case, how come so many of the companies advertising these claims of fabulous career prospects are advertising elsewhere…why are they not promoting their current staff to the managerial jobs which dominate the Jobs website pages and replacing the staff who are promoted?

Travellers

We have Travellers that have cut through a chain and padlock and moved onto a football field used by a local club. It will require a court order to remove them from this site as the police claim there is no evidence of breaking an entry. This nullifys the Law. In addition this does not protect the children who are part of this football club. Dogs now run across the sports field, deficating and urinating on the pitches. The police, environmental health, the local council are not prepared to do anything to remove them from this site. Does this make any sense? Surely this calls for a change with respect to the Law on Travellers. The only way they can be removed from the site is by a court order which will cost a voluntary organisation of approximately £1500 which they do not have. Is it about time that the government started looking after people who pay taxes regularly and abide the law, rather than flout it and not pay regular taxes. The Travellers are legally stationed there for now and are until the owner can afford to pay the court fees, polluting the football field and interrupting the use of the pitches. The law needs changed.
