Internet freedom is crucial for democracy

The Internet was built as a tool for co-operation and has so far survived multiple attempts at regulation and control for political, idealogical and financial reasons . Decisions on issues limiting the freedom of users need to be public, informed and properly debated. Vested interests struggling to retain out-moded business models (I'm thinking of the music industry in particular) should be informed that they cannot have it both ways: if the market says that consumers (meaning us mugs) have found a more desirable way of doing things then the suppliers must adapt or perish, and that the public purse is not there to prop them up. It's a free market, isn't it, or is there something I've missed? Also government should not use the opportunity offered in order to impose political control at the expense of legal control.

Repeal the Digital Economy Act

Protection of commercial rights is a necessity, but the Digital Economy Bill was ill thought out and will cause unintended consequences.  Too much was attempted under the umbrella of a single bill.

I suggest that the DEA be repealed and the provisions of the Act be subsequently dealt with by modification of existing copyright laws and perhaps pornography laws.

I understand Lord Mandelson's concern to curtail the downloading of copyrighted material without payment, but the DEA is a massive steamhammer to crack a nut.

Repeal the digital economy act

Repeal the act as it operates badly.  It's known to be bad law.

Several people have suggested this.  it's unfair.  There are 19 entries if you search here for digital economy act and all are against it, but it is not possible to vote on any.  The system on those is broken.  Interesting! Just on an act about IT!   So I am suggesting it again as it is also not possible to comment now on any of the others.

And yes I do know how to vote and have done so on other items.

Stop Copyright Industry Using UK Taxpayers Money To Privately Prosecute People

The "copyright industry", the richest industry in the world, uses a legal loophole in UK law that allows them to privately prosecute people or companies using UK Taxpayers money. All legal bills racked up by these private prosecutors are paid out of the public purse whether the copyright industry wins OR loses!

Restore the right to fair trial for online copyright infringement

Since the Digital Economy Act (DEA) was passed rapidly at the end of the last government, there is an assumption that you are guilty of copyright infringement unless you can prove your innocence. Copyright holders can make an allegation to your ISP that your are infringing copyright, and you automatically go onto a "watch list" of infringers unless you can prove that it wasn't you.

Please repeal the sections of the DEA relating to online copyright infringement and restore the requirement for copyright holders to prove your guilt, rather than leaving you to prove your innocence.
