Remove the 40mph rule for lorries

The rule that restricts most lorries from driving at more than 40 mph on non-dual carraigeway roads is presumably there in an attempt to increase safety, but is actually positively dangerous, and should be repealed.

Why is this idea important?

Reduce Traffic Problems by Banning HGVs on Sundays

In Switzerland (it was and may still be) illegal to drive an HGV on a Sunday.  This reduced traffic problems and allowed people to travel much easier on a Sunday.  There is little justification for HGVs to be on the road on a Sunday.  All you see are trucks for the large supermarkets jamming up the roads in towns and cities which could deliver overnight after 12am.  In rural counties you regularly see HGVs on minor and A roads as they travel from one store to another.

Give the road back to the motorist for just one day a week please, getting anywhere in this country is becoming a nightmare !

Motorway congestion

Police Patrols should issue fixed penalty notices to drivers who fail to obey the Highway Code by driving on the left except when overtaking. Basically, if there is a gap in front of you then you should be safely moving to the left.

Ban lorries from lane 2 on dual carriageways and both outside lanes on motorways. Make the minimum speed for cars and other vehicles that can use motorways the same as the maximum speed for lorries.

Remind van drivers that their speed limit is 60mph and therefore should be banned from lane 3 on 3 lane moroways.

Variable speed restictions work to increase FLOW of traffic, so would minimum speed at certain times of the day

If vehicles cannot maintain this minimum speed, even uphill, then they should be banned during certain busy periods.

We need to learn from other countries

When I was in the army in Germany the roads are clear of HGVs on Sundays. We can learn a lot from other countries such as Germany. No washing out, no grass cutting on Sundays. Also no parties out doors after 10pm.

If you cross the road and there is the red man and not green you are fined.

RESTRICTIONS ON WHEN LORRIES CAN USE MOTORWAYS

Fed up with being delayed on your commute to and from work because of lorries on the motorway?

I know I am, therefore, I think the government should introduce legislation that stops lorries from using our motorways between 6am and 9am, and 4pm and 7pm, with fines for offenders and loss of licence for repeat offenders. Lorry parks should be set up around the country so during this time lorries can park up to allow commuters to get to work. Although, it will hopefully result in better planning to mean lorries travel at off peak times and doing loading and unloading during this time.

Stop the loud backing up beeping on utility vehicles

Backing up beeping devices fitted on lorried, and vans are a major source of noise pollution in urban areas. Some of them are even talking (very loud), with the noise traveling hundreds of yards. I presume there must be a law or regulation forcing their installation. This must be stopped.

Noise polluting reversing alarms on heavy goods vehicles

Amend the "Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) 1986" legislation mandating the operation of an audible warning devices on reversing vehicles.

These audible warning devices do little for safety but create a cacophony of undesirable noise pollution.

Such devices presume an unwitting person will stand clear. However, if they miss the lorry movement and its engine noise they’ll be oblivious to a loud bleeper, won’t they?

Instead, legislate to install high mounted rear facing camera on heavy vehicles with restricted rear vision so the driver can properly see obstructions.

Remove A-Road 40Mph Speed Restriction for Lorries on 60 Mph Zones

As an example of Health & Safety gone mad or whatever it is, please can we remove the 40Mph A-Road speed Restriction for Lorries on 60 Mph zones.

Not only does this bunch traffic up, it frustrates drivers who are perfectly safe/entitled to do 60Mph, but can’t because they are stuck behind a lorry.  On these A-Roads there are 30 and 40 Mph restrictions in place to slow all traffic down to safe speeds in more hazardous areas, so all traffic has to conform to these restrictions already.

By having roads where Lorries travel at significantly different speeds to cars, it encourages risky overtaking, which in itself is very dangerous.  This is not to mention the misery it causes car drivers on the way to work, which in the current economic climate, is a misery we can actually do something about!
