TRAFFIC CONGESTION ON MOTORWAYS

Allow traffic to flow freely on all lanes of the moterway, overtaking should be allowed on any lane, this works perfectly well in the US.  Allowing all lanes to be fully used would increase space and stop the frustration caused by slow vehicles in the middle and outside lanes.

Switch off Motorway Lighting in Summer Months

The M1, M62, M6, M25 and no doubt many other motorways are lit, pretty much, from one end to the other.

The cost of running these lights must be horrendous, yet in the summertime we could pretty much do without them, saving both the money spent powering them for little real gain and the cost of the lamps, which would need replacing less often. Alternatively we could suppress every other lamp during the summer, thus cutting the costs by half.

Motorways

Our motorways cost far too much, if we take the time to look at other counties in the EU their autobahns and motorways. Their lanes are not as wide as our, far less of their roads have lighting nor do they use as many cats eyes.

Reduce the lane widths, cut lighting and reduce the number of cats eyes used.

We could even get the Royal Engineers to repair roads this would save us a fast fortune.

Allow undertaking on motorways & dual carriageways

Change the law so that drivers are permitted to undertake drivers in the middle or outer lanes of motorways & dual carriageways while the inner lanes remain unused.

RESTRICTIONS ON WHEN LORRIES CAN USE MOTORWAYS

Fed up with being delayed on your commute to and from work because of lorries on the motorway?

I know I am, therefore, I think the government should introduce legislation that stops lorries from using our motorways between 6am and 9am, and 4pm and 7pm, with fines for offenders and loss of licence for repeat offenders. Lorry parks should be set up around the country so during this time lorries can park up to allow commuters to get to work. Although, it will hopefully result in better planning to mean lorries travel at off peak times and doing loading and unloading during this time.

Make the Highways Agency 4x4s be in a different colour to Police Patrols!

Even been on the motorway when it suddenly slows down to 50mph all because someone ahead saw a highways agency 4×4, assumed it was the police and instinctively braked even though they were doing 70mph anyway?! Next thing you know, the entire rush hour traffic is doing 50mph on a motorway.  Brilliant.

I think the vehicles should not be allowed to have their livery that close to Police.  The refelctive battenberg squares and the lights on top (thats you cant tell arent blue until your 1 metre away) and the fact that 'Traffic Officer" is in the same font and size on the back bumper!!

You get the smug look as you pass them too, the look of 'yeah, you thought I was a copper'.  So I give them the look back of 'Yeah, if I didnt get into the Police I wouldn't pretend".

Motorway Hard Shoulder Exit

Currently you can spend an enormous time sitting in a jam on the motorway when the hard shoulder is clear.   Motorists should be allowed to use the hard shoulder from the 300metre countdown markers to exit the motorway.

Introduce a Minimum Speed Limit on Motorways & Dual Carriageways

By introducing a minimum speed limit on Motorways and dual carriageways you will ease the congestion of the main routes during periods of heavy traffic.

Remove speed-limiters from coaches

I believe that the introduction of fitting speed limiters to coaches was for a trial period. I believe that the trial period is now past and coaches are still having to be fitted with them. Also remove or increase HGV speed limits on motorways.
Allow coaches back into the 3rd lane of motorways as they are often held up by one lorry trying to overtake another. This is what causes tailbacks.
I believe that all new vehicles, cars, vans, coaches etc, with the exception of emergency vehicles, be fitted with speed limiters by the manufacture whilst being built.
If a driver is caught speeding, as part of the punishment, they should be made to have a speed limiter fitted at their own expense and it should be checked during their MOT.

Make it an offence for any vehicle over 7.5 ton to overtake on a highway between the hours of 0700 and 1900 [7-7] Monday to Friday except for the passing of parked or agricultural vehicles.

Increase but police motorway speed limits

Increase the motorway speed limit to 80 Mph but police it consistently and efficiently with average speed cameras on all motorways bridges.

70 Mph is too low a limit for modern vehicles and is out of line with the de facto standard across Europe of 130 Km/h. By creating a more appropriate limit traffic will move more consistently which will help to reduce the accident rate and also bring benefits of economic efficiency. The increase in fuel consumption from the slight increase in speed may be offset by this. And it will reduce the demands on the traffic police.

But mainly, it is a fairer law where we know the deal. The speed limit of 80 Mph is probably at the speed that most people would need to drive and if you exceed it, then you will be penalised for sure, rather than the current lottery that depends on whether you are caught.

To remove the issue of harsh penalties for small errors, there should be fixed fines without penalty points for minor infractions, for instance 10 pounds if you hit 81 Mph at some point during the day (but only once per day), 20 pounds for 82 Mph and so on. Above 85 Mph which is likely a deliberate violation then penalty points should be applied.

Additionally, the system of cameras would provide complete and comprehensive information on the current speeds and hence state of congestion of the roads. This should be made public free of charge so that GPS or mobile phones can access the information to increase the efficiency of the network by people avoiding congested areas.

Further, if the system of cameras were augmented with variable maximum speed signs, then these could be used in the case of accidents, fog and so forth. But since they would be at regular intervals of say 1 mile, they could also be used to control traffic at roadworks. Not only would the signs be there, but also the average cameras to enforce the limits. This would reduce the cost of roadworks which would no longer need to place signs and speed cameras.

Fuel brands on motorway service area signs

For some reason, motorway service areas are allowed to display their brand of coffee on motorway service area advance warning signs, but not allowed to display the brand of fuel sold on the advance warning signs on motorways.

In France, they display the next 3 service areas and the brand of fuel sold at each and that reduces the chance of fuel card holders running out of fuel on the motorway.

We run coaches and the drivers have to sometimes take a coach full of passengers off the motorway just to see if the service area supports their brand of fuel card.

Restrict the right of the police to close motorways

Police frequently close major motorways for extended periods at peak times to carry out extremely detailed forensic examination of accident scenes.  They do not usually give any warning of this.

These investigations are largely pointless as the police do not  publish or share the results with road users.

Such investigations greatly add to congestion, are an almost daily event and are a huge hidden extra cost for road users.

The investigation of accidents should no longer be a justification for closing a motorway or other major trunk road.  The police power to do this should be removed.

Increase the motorway speed limit

The motorway speed limit restricts freedom unnecessarily when traffic is not heavy. Cars today are far safer than when the 70 limit was set, and the number of people killed and injured on motorways is much smaller than on other types of road, however you measure it.

A limit of perhaps 90, or even 100, would make more sense. Needless to say a pilot would be sensible.

SAVE Billions Building ever widening motorways!

Repeal Undertaking Law and amend to Law against Centre Lane driving.

At great expense the UK government is widening the uk road network when there is a lane on all Roads (Motorways) not being used to its potential alread in exisitence!

The Laft-Hand lane or more commonly known as the 'Slow Lane'.

Centre-Lane drivers are incompetent, selfish or nervous drivers! They will be one of these. The rest of us normal drivers have to stomach ever increasing taxes on ourselves to fund these individuals who make most of us steer around them often having to use the faster right-hand lane making somestimes emergency services slow down for us trying to avoid the selfish individual tootling along merrily in the centre lane when the laft hand lane is empty!

The amazing thing here is that there is a law against continuing down the slow lane but not a law to 'Continue' on the centre lane!

Woe be tied those who 'Undertake' in the safety of the left hand lane!!!

Here Endeth My Rant!
