Life should mean life

Prison sentences should be much longer, all too often I read about some horrific crime, pleased to then learn they have been found guilty but the sentencing has become a joke. Terrorists, murderers and paedophiles should get a minimum of 40 years with no chance of parole. These people believe they have the right to take away a life(or lives) and no one should have that right. They should be punished properly, not let out after a few years because they feel rehabiliated.

Why is this idea important?

Introduce a minimum custodial term of one year for any crime

It is generally accepted that the majority of crime is “low level”. It is also generally accepted that short custodial terms only serve to increase the criminal’s knowledge of criminality.

Having a minimum term of one year will allow the state to properly oversee the criminal’s re-education and rehabilitation.

Keep them inside for longer

Criminals – murderers, rapists, muggers, violent offenders, burglars and thieves, by their actions, have excluded themselves from any human rights considerations, and should be locked up for longer to protect the public. Our government should be building more prisons to house those who behave badly, and put them to hard work inside, producing goods which will benefit society.

If prison became a place where there were no drugs, no luxuries and lots of productive labour, there would be a deterrent effect on prospective offenders and society would benefit from the absence of offenders' anti-social activites outside prison and their productive work inside prison.

Hard Labour for criminals

Dangerous and recidivist criminals should be hanged. Those that are left should be sent to work camps. A simple ration of water and stale breads (yesterdays from bakers) to all. Slighlty better food to thos ewho work. No TV, no ping pong, just a bible at night. Longer sentences, reducable only to those who work very hard over a period.

Clearing derelict land, brownfield sites, clearing litter, and labour job from dawn ot dusk, then the cell.

It is crazy that we feed and give heating and tv etc etc to scum who attack or rob us.  The answer is very simple. Work them till they drop.

In the USA they have quyite an industry going with prison wokrers. We should be making a profit out of prisons not a loss.

Boot camp

There is so much anti social behaviour, where the kids say they are bored! they are bored because they have everything.  All they seem to do is hang around in groups especially at night and causing damage, or making peoples life hell.  I think what is needed is that when a person reaches 18 yrs old does not have a job or collage and is signing on they should go to a boot camp, to show them how to respect people, and not use a swear word in every sentance, this will make them more responsible, and should be for 6-12 months at a time, because if they know something like this will happen, they may think twice if they decide to do something they should not, also it would save money on prisons, use the army to sort them out, and also get them to do community work, if they damage someone elses property, and also to pay for the damage, if they say they have no money, nearly all of them have mobile phones, computers, xbox and more, you say they sell that item to pay for the damage, again that would also make them think twice.

Also criminnal are treated really well, why is this, if someone is protecting there house, and someone breaks in then that person should be able to have the responsibility to guard their home, and not been taken to court because they attacked the burgular, this really needs changeing lots of people are not happy with this. so this really needs to be looked at, if someone breakes into your property you have a right to protect it and the family,  so be on the side of the person that has been attacked, rather then always on the criminnals side!!!

These people are no longer scared of the police and like going into prison as they can be educated, fed with no worries, by going to prison it must be horrible, so that they do not want to go back, and these so called goody goodies should keep out of this, it is because of them that we are in this state.   Also teachers should be given more power, at the moment the kids egg on the teachers saying go on hit me then I can contact my parents, caining needs to be brought back, together with dicipline (which no longer exsists).

This is important and must be looked at, we are a soft nation, we need to be more firm, especially on immigration amd people coming from europe, they get all the help, yet if you go to a europe country you get nothing.  This should be like canada and australia they can only work in the uk, if there is no one in the uk able to do the job,  britain is in a mess and many british people are getting very angry about this situation, where has england gone?

Lets get Britain back to british.    and finally the Jobcentres need to be sorted the way they treat customers, and not telling them what they are entitled to is absultly discusting, there is a discration fund of £300 for clothes for interviews, the jobcentre has been told NOT to say anything about this to the customer  (The DWP/JCP need to be more open) Mr.Purnell in April 2009 put an article in the paper regarding this.  JCP staff are not trained, do not know about customer service, they are a disastor.  When they make mistakes on benefits the customer has to suffer, I can give you many example of the stress that the JCP have caused to individuals, leading to suicide.  I could go one but something needs to be done.

Make prisoners pay for the costs of prison

When a person is found guilty of a crime there should automatically always be a fine levied against the criminal that covers the cost of the courts, police, probation service, any insurance losses and all other costs that make up the process of investigating the crime, sentencing and rehabilitation.

This fine should be enforced along similar rules to student loans, so that it payable when the person has an income of £16K or above, but the fine should also be paid if the criminal has property, belongings or bank accounts amounting to over £16K .

If a custodial sentence is served then the criminals property should be seized by the state to repay the fine othwerwise the property should be claimed by bailiffs to repay the fine if it is not paid within 28 days of sentencing. No exceptions.

get rid of NOMS and all of its bureaucracy

the national offender management model was created and implemented to join up the prison and probation services. For those of us working within these services, we know it has created nothing more than an extra layer of ineffective bureaucracy that does nothing to achieve the real purpose of these services (punishment, protection, rehabilitation etc).

My idea is simple:

Repeal the legislation that has brought NOMS into being, get rid of the huge central machine that adds little value (and certainly not value for money) and put the money into front line services.

DONT JAIL PEOPLE JUST FOR SPEEDING.

I find it absolutely absurd that people have been jailed purely for speeding when no road traffic accident  has happened &  no one has been injured whatsoever . Its stupid that someone can be jailed for  "IF" something had happened because of thier going too fast.

IPP

I feel that the IPP hould be abolished  because of over crouding. People spend longer in prison's than their tarrif because of the over crouding. Relitives have no conslusive answer to when thier loved ones will be released.

Punish Prisoners

I think when someone is sent to Prison, it should be the hardest time of their lifes! not a stroll in the park for them to meet other criminals and get more ideas on how to do other crimes etc!  TV's phones, good lunches etc should all be removed. it is not a hotel or a holiday resort.

Do the crime – serve the time

I would like to see people sent to jail – particularly for violence – actually serve the full sentence they are given.

Where is the justice in seeing some some thug jailed for violence who will get his sentence more or less halved for good behaviour. I would like to see this reversed so that bad behaviour results in an automatic 50% increase in the sentence with the provision that further bad behaviour will result in further increases in sentence.

All Prisoners must be enrolled on to Unpaid Public Service Work Programmes.

It is a disgrace that it costs £30,000-£40,000 per anum to house a prisoner to spend 24 hours of the day laying idle in their cell.

Why can't these criminals who have cost society, not be used as a free human resource to work on some of the labour intensive public work projects – in order to pay society back.

Such suggestions could be digging trenches so underground cable connection can reach our rural parts of the country? Who BT simply cannot afford to cater due to the huge cost (mainly labour costs) – and the small revenues it'd generate.

Why can't prisoners be the ones who clean our dirty streets, our public places.

I am not suggesting our prison population to undergo tortuous third world conditions and treatment. However, I cannot accept that we the public should be expected to tolerate that a prisoner's life is allowed to stay dormant in cells, then catapulted back in to society once their sentence has finished. The money spent on housing a prisoner is horrendously more than what is spent on the average pensioner's state pension.

I can understand the practicalities of trying to harness prisoners as a cheap human resource are difficult. There is an increased risk of escape, which increases the public's risk, however, surely technologies can be developed to monitor groups of working out-of-prison prisoners.

It just seems to me that the government has not had the bottle in the past to test the waters on this issue, which I can imagine is a minefield of human right's red tape, but I do feel that the government has not ever simply sat down and looked through the figures – this could save the country a lot of money.

And justly so.

Prison sentences could be served in the army instead of prison

Most criminals are young males. Young males from broken homes, with poor education and poor future prospects. They want nice things, but sadly resort to crime to get it.

Currently, when such a person commits a crime, they are either sent to prison for a few months (where they are among like minded criminals who "normalise" their criminal activities and teach them more advanced methods) or they are let back into the same communities that they have terrorised for months, on the tag system, where they can proudly show off their "tag" as a badge of honour to their peers.

It needs to change. Ken Clarke said that prisons aren't working. He's right. They're overcrowded with people whose lives are on pause, sleeping and waiting for food whilst watching tv' and playing on PlayStations.

We need to instill a sense of national pride and respect into these people. We need to place them into an environment that teaches them the skills they never learned. We need them to be surrounded by people they can look up to and have respect for. We need the condition to be "if you can't learn to work as part of this team, it could cost you your life tomorrow".

Conscript these wrongdoers into the army for the length of their sentence. Give them a uniform and boots and ship them out to the nearest drill camp in preparation for their duty of service either in the uk or abroad.

Let them complete an NVQ in engineeering, vehicle mechanics, catering or similar…basically teach them a trade whilst in the army. Let them learn from our respected soldiers before they return to our communties and let them come back into society reformed, re-educated and with a new found respect as well as a brighter future ahead.

Reform of the prison system

For crimes like theft, fraud, arson and woeful damage of property, instead of a mandatory period of time spent in prison for this, which costs the state a large sum per prisoner, introduce a system of "work hours" that pay out at minimum wage+ depending on the work. Convicts should have to pay back (e.g. 3 times, which would include court expenses) the cost of the damage done or items stolen.

When on this system, they should get adequate food, bedding and exercise to live a healthy lifestyle, but any commodities beyond this should be charged for as extras. e.g., if they want a better quality of food, it will increase the amount of hours needing "worked" before their release.

Jobs available could include simple things like food production, basic product assembly, maintenance of public works, e.g. roads. At a further extreme, a hand crank or similar that when turned that would produce electricity to run hospitals, schools and other public buildings, also helping keep electricity costs stabilised and promoting a greener economy.

Human rights, prisoners and foreign prisoners

I believe that there needs to be a good overall of the Human Rights Act, it may have started out as a good idea but seems to serve the wrong doer, crimminal and legal aid solicitor more often than the decent law abiding person it probably set out to protect.

I also believe that if a person from another country commits a crime then they should serve out the sentence in their country of origin and loose all rights to return to Britain.  This would vastly cut our prison population down.  If their country of origin is not as cushy as here – tough they should have thought about that.

As for our home grown crimminal it is little wonder that people say prison does not work, some prisoners probably have a better life inside than they do on the outside, with no money worries, T.Vs, playstations and the up-keep of their drug addiction through methadone programmes.  If they do not get what they want be it tobacco, phone cards or whatever they preach the human rights or racism card.

I would have liked to comment on other issues but I only have a short break and this website is unbelievably slow.

Reform the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act

The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act was originally introduced in order to "wipe the slate clean" for minor offenders, after a suitable elapse of "spent" time – usually 7 years.

This was a progressive libertarian idea, aimed at giving – especially younger/ minor – offenders a better chance of securing employment later in life.  (i.e. A  "spent" £1 fine for misguided student drunkeness at University should not then remain as an ongoing CRB punishment impacting upon an individual's career prospects for the remainder of their life).

The younger offenders targeted at the time of the passage of the original legislation have now matured and many are seeking middle to senior ranking posts, ordinary/basic CRB checks or not.

However, over recent years, a trend has emerged in the Cabinbet Office Public Appointments Unit, general Civil Service management recruitment, local authorities, universities, the Public Sector generally (and its public recruitmment agents) indicating that the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act does not apply to the majority of their advertised posts. Hence "spent" convictions must be declared and subjected to "Enhanced" (i.e. gilt-edged) CRB checks, entirely excluded from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act..

In short,  Public Sector recruitment has steadily exempted itself from compliance with both the spirit and provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.

So, either as a Society we should now repeal the now toothless Act and accept that offenders of any age will be CRB scarred for life or, if we are to opt for progressive liberalism, the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act should be strengthened to permit "enhanced" CRB check exceptions ONLY in the cases of posts associated directly with national security.  (Child abuse being already covered separately by the register of secual offenders).

repeal human rights for convicted criminals and sort prison overcrowding

Remove human right legislation for convicted criminals and where possible reduce their sentences. Stop all the TV and free videos, drugs, games and conjugal visits. Stop weekends out in the community. Stop making life inside easy. Make them work for their food. Make it unpleasant and they will not repeat so often. This will cut the prison population and save a fortune.

The secondary effect would be to reduce the bill for courts and lawyers acting for these criminals at the public's expense and we the taxpayer would not be handing out thousands to criminals because we did not supply their favourite porn magazine! Legal aid costs for such nonesense is absolutely unneccessary.

Prisoners should have no more perks than a beggar

To save public money, prisoners should have no access to mains powered devices such as televisions, radios or access to the Internet (if they currently can). Radios should only be permitted if they are battery power but preferably solar-powered (if they are in a cell this won't work) so only wind-up powered radios should be permitted. Prisoners should not have access to mobile phones and to ensure that they can not use smuggled in phones, mobile phone detector need to installed if possibleor 2 years added to their prison sentence if found. Prisoners should not have the right to vote.
