Sunday Trading Law extension

Hi,

I think it is a little crazy that supermarkets and alike can open 24 hours a day during the week but shut in the early afternoon on a Sunday.  There are many occasions when it would be very useful to have longer trading hours.

Why is this idea important?

remove the opening restictions on Sunday in England and Wales

why are stores only allowed to open for 6 hours on a Sunday?  What kind of half way house is that.  I used to live in Scotalnd where this rule doesn't apply and it's great to ahve the freedom to shop whenever you get the chance.

Eliminate limits on Sunday trading hours

As a capitalist country there should not be limits on retail trading hours, trading hours should be governed by demand not government!  Restricting retail hours on Sundays is against capitalism.  As Christians we complain how other governments have laws based on their religious beliefs when it comes to business yet we do the same.

Repeal ALL Sunday Trading/Behaviour Laws

Be it only being allowed to open a shop exceeding x square feet for six hours, or limitations on hunting rights. The 'Keep Sunday Special' laws have no place in this society.

Repeal Sunday shopping restrictions

If I go to my village shop on a Sunday after 16h00 I cannot buy soap or toilet paper – these are but a few items that  are prohibited from sale after 16h00 on Sunday.   Yet I am permitted to buy  wine, junk food and cigarettes.

Smaller shops are able to comply with these restrictions by blocking off certain aisles or sections of their shop, but this is impractical for large supermarkets; they just close altogether at 16h00 on a Sunday.

It is patently absurd that I can buy a bottle of wine on a Sunday at 16h30 but I can't by a corkscrew to open it!    What purpose do such regulations serve in a secular state?  Indeed, they would not even serve any purpose in a theocracy.

Deregulate Sunday Trading

In England and Wales Sunday trading is restricted to a maximum of six hours for large stores i.e. supermarkets, retail parks etc.

I propose we fully deregulate The Sunday Trading Act allowing any shop to open at any time.

Scrap Restrictions on Sunday Trading

The current law in the UK (Except Scotland) prevents shops with a floor area of more than 280 square metres (3,000 square feet) opening for more than 6 hours between 10:00 and 18:00.

This law should be scrapped.  Shops should be allowed to open when they want on Sundays.

Summertime Trading Hours

During British Summertime, I cannot see why city centres must see their shops close at an arbitrarily early hour of the evening given people are out later and later. I do not know the history nor the background (eg Sunday Trading Act 1994), but would imagine, for example, that shops closing at 6pm on a Sunday (when it's daylight until 9:30pm) is not always an economical decision. For example, Covent Garden is so busy during the summer evenings and yet supermarkets and coffee shops etc seem to shut down! I would call for Summertime trading hours so that when the clocks change, businesses have the opportunity to extend their opening hours, both at weekends and during the week.

Remove Sunday Trading Restrictions in England & Wales

I would advocate the removal of Sunday trading restrictions in England and Wales, allowing shops to open whenever they choose.  To protect workers who wish to keep Sunday as a holy/family day, I would keep the system where workers can opt-out of working on this day.

Remove the Sunday trading act 1994

I feel that the Sunday Trading Act 1994 should be removed. Majopr retailers should not be allowed to trade at all on a Sunday. This will help re-install family values, it will encouarge people to spend time toghther as families. By all shops being restricted to this law it would ensre fairness. Small business would still be able to suceed in the marktet place, and big business can reduce some costs. The good that this would do our country is almost impossible to measure.

FREE UP SUNDAY TRADING

Remove all special restrictions on trading on Sundays and religious holidays.

We need to get away from the idea that everything that is not forbidden is compulsory. And we need to stop thinking that particular types of employee or sizes of shop need protection from competition. People and businesses should get on in the market place.

Also, our laws are daft. How can there be a moral wrong in trading just because you have an area of a certain size and have already been open for 6 hours.

We should not let lobby groups prevent innocent activities, like shopping.

Repeal the Sunday Trading laws

As a regular chuch goer I see no reason at all not to let shops open on a Sunday. We now live in a 24/7 world where we expect all services and facilities to be available at all times. Alow shops to open on a Sunday if they wish – it would not be compulsory. Why can't I pop to my local supermarket before the early service on Sunday or even on my way home from the evening service?

Remove limits on sunday shop opening times

Why do we have limits on what time shops can open, particularly on a sunday?  Some people argue it is to 'protect' workers from having to work the weekends and evenings, or maybe it is linked to old religious traditions?  Either way, in a modern multi-culteral, multi-religous and 24 hr society, why can't businesses open and operate however they wish to.  And indeed, why can't I go and access the shops whenever I want to.

I'm not a dead keen shopper, but I would like to be able to pick stuff up from the shops on a sunday afternoon. And who hasn't been caught out when returning home on a late sunday afternoon to find nothing in the fridge and the local shops and supermarket closed?  As a previous employee of Safeway supermarket, I know that there are plenty of people who are happy to work any day.

So lets think about further repealing the laws which prevent shops opening when they want, particularly on a sunday.

Repeat Sunday Trading Laws and Legalise Certain Drugs

Repeal all restrictions on Sunday trading

Legalise any drug that could be made harmless, or only as harmful as alcochol/tobacco/caffeine, if made under proper conditions by law-abiding manufacturers.

Sunday Trading Laws

Currently shops can only trade for 6 hours on a sunday, due to antiquated laws

I believe that this should be at the discretion of the shop holder.  If i want to shop early or late on a sunday, i should have the opportunity to do so.

Sunday Trading Act 1994

In July 1994, a compromise law was introduced that prohibited big shops from opening for more than 6 hours on a Sunday, this suggestion would repeal that law, and allow businesses to decide whether to open on Sunday or not.

Sunday trading should be the same as weekday trading

Shops should be given freedom to choose whether they wish to open on a Sunday, and not restricted in this decision by the Sunday Trading Act (1994) which only permits large stores to do so (for a certain time period).

The only justification I can see for not permitting Sunday trade is on religious grounds (i.e with Sunday being the Sabbath) so please bring up some more reasons in your comments if there are others

Abolish Sunday Trading Restrictions in England

Sunday trading restrictions inconvenience the majority in order to placate a vocal Trade Union and religious activist minority. There have long been no such restrictions in Scotland, and no problems have been encountered there.

Please abolish all Sunday opening hours restrictions on shops of all sizes.
