Abolish 0870 and 0845 numbers

2 Comments 17th July 2010

Calls to these and similar numbers are supposedly charged at 'national' and 'local' rates respectively.

In truth they are Premium Rate numbers

A cut of the cost of these calls is received by the recipient of the call.

(now you know why your bank leaves you on hold for so long…)

Many phone users now have free or inclusive minutes to all land line numbers whether national or local.

Why should we be forced to subsidise large companies and government agencies out of our own pockets when we phone up to make a complaint about their shoddy service?!

Why does this matter?

I think it is a absolutely brilliant idea as i am furious about the amount of unwanted phone-calls and texts that i receive which i have ended up having to pay for. Also i am fed up with the amount of calls that i have to make to various companies which only have 0800,0845 and 0844 numbers. It costs me an incredible amount of money which i can ill afford to have to pay out, especially in the economic climate we are having to suffer through at the moment. All the while these companies are getting richer and richer.

0845 and 0870 numbers have not been local or national rate since 2004. Advertising Standards issued a note about this in September 2005 but it has been widely ignored.

From 1 July 2015, all users of 084, 087 and 09 numbers are required to declare their Service Charge wherever their number is advertised. Those who are unable to justify their Service Charge must change their number to stop imposing it.

Ofcom made matching replacement 034 and 037 numbers available for this purpose in 2007.
Calls to 03 numbers cost the same as calling 01 and 02 numbers and count towards inclusive allowances on landlines and mobiles.

From the same date, calls to 080 numbers become free from all mobile phones.
