The idea
The law on trespass should be changed from a civil to a criminal offence in order to stop illegal travellers camps being set up.
Why is it important?
At the moment the police are powerless to intervene as trespass is a civil offence. It is only when it becomes a public order issue that they are able to involve themselves, Travellers can therefore turn up anytime, anywhere and set up camp with complete impunity.
Changing trespass from a civil to a criminal offence would allow the police to turn up and order them off land/premises and make them liable to arrest if they refused.
