Bureaucracy in the planning system

The idea

Reduce wholly unnecessary bureaucracy and red tape in a planning system which has virtually stalled in its ability to deliver. Ensure that planning officers apply planning policy only to applications, as opposed to personal prejudice.

Why is it important?

Local Authority planning officers appear to be trapped in a system in which no-one appears to be able to make a decision for fear of failure and repercussion. It is now the norm to object to an enquiry as it is easier to follow this route than support something. During the planning process the statutory consultees routinely fail to respond within the specified timescales and applications are constantly delayed. Investment in projects necessary to inject investment in a fragile economy are delayed and opportunities are lost.

The Town and Country Planning Act must be the single piece of legislation that has had both a negative impact on our townscape and ability to provide investment in housing.
