All animals for the human/ pet food chain deserve as painless a death as possible. The UK had a law that all animals for slaughter must be pre-stunned first and then killed. Halal/ Kosher meat does not carry out any pre-stunning and therefore would be contrary to our laws and would not be considered of compliance with Animal Welfare Act 2006. A dispensation was granted some years ago to allow this style of slaughtering and this should be removed forthwith.
The EU has just approved the use of identification labels for halal/ kosher style meat, however, the practice should be banned in the UK fullstop.
