imprisonment for non-payment of fines………

There's a huge problem with imprisoning people for non-payment of fines. It costs c.300£/d to keep someone in even a Cat C prison. On everage people serve at least 3 of the 5 days. Why not authorise Courts to make an attachment of earnings or to benefits?

Without this deterrent, why would you pay a Court fine or TV licence fine if it costs the taxpayer multiples  of what the original fine was?

I speak from experience about the amount of repeat offences some people amass having worked in prison over the last few years

Why is it important?

taxpayers money being used for this  & equity- to some people, a criminal record won't matter and thus they're insulated from the consequences of their action by refusing to pay
