Raise 40 mph limit for HGV’s to 45 mph (on a trail basis)

The 40 mph limit for goods vehicles is outdated – They have air-brakes now and with disc brakes using ABS, EBS and some have engine brakes and retarders.

There is also an environmental issue here as you are not quite able to achieve top gear at 40 mph. Raising it to 45 mph would save fuel and reduce the frustration of the following car drivers as their speedo's would read 50 mph.

It would also stop/ reduce the crazy overtaking manoeuvres.

Why is this idea important?

Increase LGV Speeds on A Roads

Repeal the law which limits large goods vehicles to 40 MPH on A Roads.

This law is very impractical, causes congestion, is actually dangerous as other road users become frustrated following a truck doing 40MPH.

Technoglogy has improved road safety massively over the last number of years and this law is now out dated. In most circumstances, 50MPH is a perfectly suitable speed for an LGV and as drivers have to pass stringent tests to drive an LGV, they are well able to judge this for themselves.

If necessary, ban truck overtaking on two lane dual carriageways as well.

Scrap the different speed limits that apply to goods vehicles over 2T and 7.5T on all classes of road. The speed limit will be harmonised for all vehicles.
