The motorway speed limit should be raised from 70 to 80mph.

Why does this matter?

Moving the speed limit to 80mph would bring us into line with most European countries, e.g. France (130kph/81mph). The limit of 70mph is too low and contributes to congestion on motorways by slowing the flow of traffic. An 80mph limit makes for good cruising speed and is a suitable limit for modern Britain. The 70mph limit was only supposed be temporary, introduced by Barbara Castle. Like income tax (also temporary to pay for the Napoleonic wars) it has remained with us…the sooner it is repealed, the better. It could be pushed through on a 3 line-whip in minimal time and could go some way to restoring motorists' confidence in government.
