Calculate benefits and tax credits per individual, not per couple

The idea

Calculate jobseekers allowance and working tax credits on adults' individual NI contributions and work history – not on what their partner earns.

Why is it important?

The current system of benefits and tax credits is based on outdated and unworkable principles with regards to couples.

Couples, especially unmarried couples, do not expect to support one another financially. Disqualifying adults from claiming benefits or tax credits on the basis that thier partner should support them financially is unfair and unrealistic.

Calculating benefits for adults on an individual basis, disregarding partner income, will allow people to support themselves through difficult times, and not encourage breakups, seperate living or dependence on abusive partners.
