Childcare and tax allowance

The law could be changed to allow a working parent to take on the pre-tax earning allowance of a home-based parent, in families with children under 5. It might also be helpful to single parents in particular if a grandparent providing unpaid care for child(ren) under 5 could be designated as the 'partner' for this purpose.

Why is this idea important?

Childcare benefits for Grandparents who are able to help

I would like to see Grandparents recognised in some way who help parents with Child Care on a full or part time basis and be helped to be able to take the Grandchildren on days out, plus gain in some way towards their shopping as they would be expected to feed the grandchildren too whilst they're are looking after their grandchildren in order for the parents to be able to afford to go back to work.  I understand that there are tax credits or child care voucher schemes but as these only cover part of the cost of a full week in a children's nursery , child minder or child care system, some people may have to enlist the help of their parents in order to go back to work full time because of the finacial costs of child care.

Recognise Grandparents as Carers and give them the same benefits as foster parents.

I can't understand why Central Governement and County Councils do not recognise grandparents as offical carers. My parents have taken guardianship of my Nieces at great personal expence to themselves – my mum had to give up her job-only to be told that they are not entitled to the same finacial help that a foster parent would have got had my nieces gone into to care. I find this a disgrace.

Grandparents as childminders

Allow grandparents to be paid under the Child Tax Credit system to look after their grandchildren while parents go out to work. This will be better for the child and family overall. It's ridiculous that an outsider can get money for childminding, yet someone who is closer to the child and who understands the child better gets no help at all.
