Christmas in December

All shops and other public spaces should be prevented from imposing Christmas on us until December 1st.

This would mean no garish displays of lights, tinsel or muzak playing Christmas songs until that date.

Why is this idea important?

Allocate resources to rebuild canal network

Britain is very lucky to have an outstanding network of canals which today are used mainly for leisure boating.  The British Waterways Board has had on ongoing program of construction and improvement but it has not enough resources.

Compared to the billions spent on useless projects, the return on investment on the British canals would be very good indeed, for the countryside, and balance of payments.

February 29th Should be a Bank Holiday

Every four years we are given the gift of an extra day in the year.  This day should be an additional bank holiday for everyone.  It only happens every four years so would not be expensive for businesses.  It happens in the winter so would be cheaper as heating and lighting bills for employers could be reduced.

Most important, it would give everyone an occasional  break in that long dark period between the end of Christmas and the arrival of Easter, a chance for everyone to get some fresh air, check the countryside or local parks for the first signs of Spring, and appreciate the gift of a whole extra day.

I would also suggest that the theme of the day should be an appreciation of the natural world and the arrival of the new Season.

reduce minimum hols back to 20 days inc bank holidays

The last government increased minimum holiday allowance per year to 28 days which was supposed to allow for the bank holidays. I would like it to be repealed.

We're a hair salon – a very labour intensive business – and this has had a major effect on our business.

  1. with a staff of 18 this has meant we now have to pay 360 days of extra holiday (18*20) – effectively another member of staff who we could have employed but now can't afford to.
  2. Also as a business that doesn't opperate just Mon-Fri this causes us a problem. Some of my staff never work a Monday and so they get an unfair advantage over those who do – (there are four bank holiday Mondays?) The ones who would work the bank holiday get paid and have their holiday for the day another day but the ones who don't work the holiday also get an extra day's holiday and don't have to work which isn't very fair. Then if we start discussing parttime staff who don't work Mondays the situation becomes even crazier.
  3. In my view the market should be left to determine holiday allowances over the previous 20 day minimum. If you aren't a good empoloyer and don't look after your team they won't stay with you and you won't be successful. We provide many perks for our team but an extra 8 days of holiday is just too much especially in these lean time.
  4. Also remember that althought we try to run our business by the book many salon owners, take cash out of their businesses and pay their staff in cash which gives them and their staff an unfair advantage over us legitimate businesses. We've always taken the view that to compete against these underhand businesses we have to be legal but lean.
  5. the rise to 20% VAT will also hit us very hard.

National Day

I propose that the UK should have a national day to celebrate all things great about our country. Singapore has set an excellent example on how to promote a sense of national pride, with their yearly celebrations in the month of August – we should copy this.

I propose that a date towards the end of July be chosen as national day and this day be declared a public holiday. During the whole month of July various national events should be held around the country (and union jack flags be flown) culminating in a parade/grand performance in a stadium where representatives from front line services (nurses, police, firemen, army, navy, etc) and volunteer groups march in uniform in front of the Queen. Yearly honours might also be announced during this ceremony. We might also want to include yearly themes to remember key moments of our history.

This would help to restore some respect for our country and for the people that work in critical roles. In the long run, I think the social and financial benefits would more than cover the costs of organising this and bringing it into our national curriculum.

Class grandparents as immediate family

If one of your grandparents die, and you have no holiday days left with your employer, you have NO right to take time off to go to there funeral.

When we're young, often our grandparents bring us up, as our parents work. Yet, you have no right to take compassionate leave from work to respect them at there funeral.

If your employer isn't very understanding, there is nothing you can do,

Shorten the working week

We all hate mondays, so why not have it as a day off? Whilst I'm at it, we all hate Fridays too, so lets make that part of the weekend too.

The only issue we have then is that Tuesday will become the new Monday, and Thursday would become the new Friday. so, lets make those part of the weekend too.

So, basically, you would have to fit everything in on wednesday…but think of all the extra free time you will have!

Increase the amount of days in a week

Right, how many of you have been out drinking on a Friday and Saturday night and then out for a few on a sunday lunchtime. Don't you think there should be another day in between sunada and Monday to aid our recovery?

We could call it sunandabitday

Vote for an 8 day week!

UK Day

I f we have celebratory days for all the constituent countries within the United Kingdom, why not have a day that celebrates our collectiveness? This would help to define our modern identity as a nation and counteract the nationalisms of each country within.

Law restricting children to 10 days family holiday

The law against children taking more than 10 days family holiday per year, punishable with £100 fine per child.

Schools take a high moral ground point of viewwhen they are giving permission even for days within the 10 day limit.

1: School trips to the countryside or abroad or wherever are always touted as ''valuable not to be missed opportunities''

The benefits of school trips cannot be underestimated for their ability to widen the childrens point of view and encourage them to take a greater interest in other cultures, the countryside, history, etc.

Family holidays to the same places are regarded by school as detrimental to the child's education, ''a day missed of education can never be made up''

2: Easy to show that children who take more days off from school have worse results, this does not mean this is the cause but a correlation.

3:This law is like a 9 p.m curfew for the whole population, definitely has  a positive result in fewer problems on the streets at night but is just a blanket restriction on freedom.

4: Family holidays taken in term time are

better for holiday time availability and flexibility for working parents

better for businesses for flexibility

better for class sizes

better for spreading the load on transport systems

better for less mental stress of bank holiday style mass movements of people

better for holiday business to have a more consistent income

better for price affordability

better to develop childrens flexibility, ability to fit in and catch up

5: Family holidays are extremely important for many good reasons and need to be recognised as important.

Family holidays are a time when families can relax and communicate together, children can reflect and absorb.

6:The attitude of attendance being such an important are of school needs adjustment

Achievement, communication, cooperation, flexibility, contribution, acceptance of differing people and their views and respect for people to live their lives differently need to be encouraged.

This is a lazy and immoral law restricting everyone's freedom and is turning schools into prisons instead of places of creativity communication and passion for learning
