Scrap Challenge 21 and Challenge 25

Comment 4th July 2010

The Challenge 21 and Challenge 25 schemes in shops have forced people to carry photographic ID even if they are unmistakably old enough to buy alcohol.  People should only be asked for ID if they might be too young and there should not be a blanket "ask everyone for ID" rule.  In any case if somebody is too young to buy alcohol they will just ask someone who is old enough to buy it for them.

Why does this matter?

These schemes are misleadingly designed to make people thing you have to be 21 or 25 to buy alcohol.  They also disciminate against young people and subject shoppers to degrading and embarrassing treatment at checkouts. In any case if somebody is too young to buy alcohol they can just ask someone who is old enough to buy it for them.

Now is the chance to say no to the ID-culture and surveillance society.  It is only a matter of time before the scheme is upgraded to "Challenge 40" as seen in the USA.
