Make jailbreaking legal

Today, the USA made Jailbreaking legal. This allows people who own mobile phones to remove the manufacturer's restrictions. This means they can install their own applications.

The UK needs to do the same.  We need to make Jailbreaking legal.

Repeal the ban on using a mobile phone (etc.) while driving

This is almost a duplicate of a similar suggestion but I feel a fresh start is required.

The current mobile phone ban law is another case of penalising the innocent for the failures of the few drivers that use mobile phones while driving dangerously.

There is legislation to cover the situation (Driving without due care and attention OR not being in full control of the vehicle) and hence it is unnecessary.

This ban is ignored as many feel they're capable of driving safely while using a phone – and it can be done.

There should be no penalties for doing it safely and high penalties (lifetime driving ban) for not doing it safely.

Ban IEMI harvesting

Some shopping centres (noteably Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth) as well as national chains of coffee shops routinely gather the IEMI numbers of mobile phones and other similar devices carried by the customers who visit these establishments. At present there is little publicity or scrutiny of the scale of such automated IEMI harvesting or the uses to which the data so gathered is put.

Mobile phone use

To have draconian laws in regard to the use of mobiles phones whilst driving. Many drivers appear to be putting  two fingers up to the law. It is a dangerous practice and it has to stop.

If caught the driver should be fined £5000,have his phone confiscated and if he/she repeats this deplorable action have their vehicle impounded and sold at auction.

Driving with mobile phones

First offence – confiscate the phone with the sim card still in  and make the driver crush the phone under the wheels of the car there and then.

Repeat offence – take the phone and the car and crush them both.

Double repeat – as above but leave the driver in the car.

Ban fixed duration contracts & Encourage competition

Most service providers like Phone providers, Broadband providers, Electricity Providers require a fixed term contract for their service. The contracts have to renewed for fixed terms only. This makes no sense. If a service provider incurs an initial cost of setting up the service then it should be allowed one of the two options: 1) charge a reasonable activation fee – which many companies still do, or 2) require a minimum duration of contract. There needs to be an upper limit like 3 or 6 months on this duration. Anything more than that is unreasonable in fast changing world of technology.  For example, if there is a new phone provider which provides cheaper calls using a breakthrough in technology, why should people be still stuck to a phone company that is being proved incompetent in the market.

An important change needed in regarding renewal of contracts. Once a customers first contract with a service provider is complete. There are no sensible business reasons to force customer into another long term contract. The Law should require that contracts become renewable on a monthly basis after the first contract / minimum service period is complete.

Merge driving with a mobile phone with other driving offences.

The offences of driving without due care and attention, and dangerous driving could be used to prosecute people who use their mobile phones behind the wheel, if necessary giving them points codes. There should be no need to be so specific and long winded with our laws.

Allow tinkering with electronics you own

Once we buy a piece of hardware (e.g. mobile phone), we should be allowed to tinker with it, add, remove and replace software on it, and even break it if we want to.

Current UK DRM laws prohibit us from removing software from a device, and replacing it with our own. Sometimes, even open-source software (against the will of the author) is surrounded by a "DRM wrapper" that prevents you from removing it!

I am asking government to restore the freedom to allow people to "remove" or "replace" software on hardware, and to forbid manufacturers from restricting people from doing such acts.

Use of Mobile Phones in Vehicles

This surely needs to be amended to include the use of mobile phones for calling AND texting whilst in control of ANY vehicle on the road – including bicycles and motorbikes.
