Degree courses

This is up for review, and I am not sure that a student tax is the way forward, however, what should be top of the agenda, is making sure the students that study vocational courses, especially in science and engineering should be financially encouraged, and those that want to study media or archaeology etc can pay the full amount.

Why is this idea important?

Abolish student loans

Student loans are a curse that gets students of all ages into debt, on the supposition that they will be able to get a job afterwords to repay the loan, which either may not exist, or may not pay half as much as they expected, and thus leave them in a serious long term debt problem.

The culture of personal debt, which benefits only the banks, who suck on the public like leeches, must end, except in the case of essential major purchases like a home and possibly a car.

Banks instead should be lending to (mainly in the form of credit agreements) to businesses, and not funding mass higher education, which except in the case of certan professional jobs like medicine (and I mean DOCTORS, not NURSES) nobody needs, to say nothing of the ridiculous number of ever high and mostly meaningless degrees like Masters and so on, which numerous people are now feeling obliged to take to distinguish themselves from the glut of people with first degree, should shouldn't actually have one in the first place because it neither represents any truly useful knowledge, nor does society need them toi have it.

What we need is people who can DO THEIR JOBS PROPERLY, regardless of whether they have a degree or not, and most jobs can be done by ON THE JOB TRAINING given to suitable candidates tested for aptitude and chosen at the discretion of the employer.

Allowing british students to take their student loan aywhere in the world.

As a student, i am finding it increasingly difficult to continue my studies, due to increasing restrictions on my education, and the funds i need to continue with my education. Yes, i do understand britain is in the middle of a financial crisis, and it is the taxpayers responsibilty to help to pay this debt back. However, how are future taxpayers ever going to earn the funds needed to repay this debt, if they cannot, due to financial restrictions, continue with their education. In order for people to earn more money, they need skills and qualifications. This is why i am asking that the government put more money into the educational system, and allow students to take their student loan abroad, to ensure they get the best education possible for their field of study. I geel that this will vastly improve a students motivation to go into a work, as they will be in an industry they enjoy. They are also more likely to bring their skills back to the U.K, and therefore reduce the rates of unemployment in the U.K, and increase the speed at which this massive debt is repaid.

Anomaly in Student loans used to pay housing benefit (scotland)

The welfare reforms expected the core jobless to go back to work or take up education and training.  There is an anomaly with student loans in Scotland whereby housing benefit must be paid out of the student loan.

Unfortunately, the SAAS and student services do not inform about the anomaly even on the SAAS website and a person may only apply for student fee exemption without realising that they must also take out a student loan to pay their rent as housing benefit no longer applies.

Housing Benefit Regulation s.64 (3)  (b).

'A student shall be treated as possessing a student loan in respect of an academic year where (a) a student loan has been made to him in respect of that year or (b) he could acquire such a loan in respect of that year by taking reasonable steps to do so."

This anomaly causes an overpayment of housing benefit with subsequent claw back which places the student in arrears of rent.  If in arrears a landlord can use this as a reason to evict, the student then becomes homeless.

However, it is possible to get a discretionary payment from the Council to pay the arrears but this does not garantee that a valid notice to quit if served timeously will not still mean a student is homeless.
