Change to the TV License Fee

As somebody has suggested a change to the TV license would be a good idea. The license fee only really pays for BBC coverage (Radio & TV). This doesn't cover other terrestrial channels.

if you watch and subscribe to SKY and other pay per view channels you are expected to pay again. Could this not be reviewed, so that you ONLY pay for what you watch and now in the 21st century not what you can recieve has the BBC suggest.

I currently pay over £145 for BBC, then another £80 for SKY and that doesn't include other channels such as ESPN.

Isn't it time the cost was reviewed?

Extended role for traffic wardens

Would it not be a valuable consideration that traffic wardens should be obliged to check vehicle tax discs. Individuals have already broken the law by not having one. More seriously, they are likely not to have any car insurance either.

Reform Air Passenger Duty

Remove air passenger duty from international flights to the EU and other countries and retain them for cheaper domestic flights.

Replace air passenger duty with an Airplane Tax within Britain. If the plane if full no tax is paid. If it is 90% full then a 10% tax is paid by the airline. There should a reverse rolling scale.

For 80% full, 20% tax is paid.

For 20% full, 80% tax is paid.

For an empty plane bar  the crew – 100% tax is paid.

Fuel Duty Reform

Petrol and diesel prices in this country are prohibitive and totally out of order.

Reform Fuel Duty so that if the price is variable and a fuel tax sliding scale needs to be applied.

If it is more than 35p per litre (say 40p) pre-retail then the Government tax take will be 60% share of the overall £1.

If it is more than 25p per litre (say 30p) pre-retail then the Government tax take will be 70% share of the overall £1.

If it is less than 25p per litre pre retail (say 20p) then the Government tax take will be 80% share of the overall £1.

This will keep the cost of fuel roughly about £1 per litre allowing for varying fuel and tax prices.

Abolish Workplace Parking Levy

Get rid of this tax because it punishes people for driving to work where most people are some distance from their work. It is also a stealth tax and totally undiscriminate because it will apply ro any business with about 10 or 11 car park spaces or more. Not exactly large companies is it!

Official or company cars

Any person who is employed in the public sector (either local or central government – or their agencies, armslength management schemes etc) and gets a car provided as part of their job, or gets funding towards a car, must have a car that is either manufactured in the UK or at least manufactured by a company that has some of it's range manufactured in the UK.

Furthermore, no vehicle funded from the public purse should exceed 1600cc unless there is a solid case for this ie: police PURSUIT vehicles (not for driving Chief Constables about the place), para-medic vehicles, MPs security etc.

set a maximum amount payable  this should take in to account what a non parent earns,  people still have a right to live their lives without struggling to pay for their children.  The CSA are a law to themselves   people need help.

Impose National Insurance on Dividends

Many companies pay their owners / directors in dividends(assuming the directors are shareholders in many companies either because they are closed companies or get share options. No National Insurance is paid on the dividends albeit it is naturally income. Repeal this tax break to increase revenue and decrease inequality of treatment of income.

Remove all benefit in kind perks

This is costing the normal taxpayer millions in uncollected tax and the few that benefit don't need the perks paid for by the company – I am referring to for instance companies having sailing boats or holiday homes which supposedly should be accessible by all in the company but in reality are used by directors or one man band companies. The cost to the tax payer is under taxation of the companies involved and a great amount of paperwork and impossible policing by Customs & Revenue.

Retrospective Taxation

I have completed a self assessment tax form every year with full disclosure of all information. HMRC ignored the information for 7 years and are currently trying to get tax law changed retrospectively back to 1987 so that I will have additional taxes to pay.

This does not seem fair to me.

Address flaws in 2006 Equalities Act.

This act makes it an makes it an offence to discriminate against a religion on the grounds that it might be a religious philosophy only. This Act could be used by groups such as "The Church of Scientology" to obtain 100% rate relief on all their properties.

The Church of Scientology is campaigning for religious recognition in the UK. It is doing this so that it can then claim discrimination with respect to business rates.

Either repeal this legislation or rewrite it or scrap business rates exemptions for religious places of worship and only allow business rates exemptions for charities which would include most of the main stream religions. The church of scientology is not a charity in the UK and rightly so because charities do altruistic work and the church of scientolugy does not.

The only groups who should be entitled to subsidies by the rate paying businesses and public of this country are those who provide a charitable benefit to society. This legislation allows those that do not benefit society to claim subsidies simply because they have a "religious philosophy".

For the Coalition to introduce a Robin Hood Tax…

As some people know, a Robin Hood tax is a tax on banks and other financial institutions transactions.

There could also add piece of legislation in which, when enough money is raised (to combat the deficit), 40% of that tax income could go to some sort of Treasury Kitty that will be a bit like a savings account. The money saved could then could help future generations in this country when another version of the "Credit Crunch" comes along and the Country is suddenly in dire straits. It would come in very useful.

Increase discount on Council Tax for single people

Local Government Finance Act 1992.  Council tax is based on 2 adults living in a dwelling.

However, the single person's discount is only 25% leaving them to pay a disproportionate share of the 2-adult cost. I believe the discount for a single adult should be 50% of the 2-adult cost.

Create a single company tax to simplify everything

My idea is to merge VAT, corporation tax and employer's national insurance into one.  A single company "turnover tax" would replace these which would simplify the onorous reporting needs on many businesses.

I would suggest that every quarter each business would calculate a tax charge (rate dependent on industry type) and report/pay this to HMRC.  A supplement calculation would be done for the amount of payroll costs which would be equivalent to the Employer's national insurance contributions.  I would also add onto this calculation a means of calculating class 1a national insurance for company paid benefits, such as company cars etc.

VAT – is really just a tax on people who are not VAT registered, i.e. us!  The way VAT works for businesses is for them to act as a holder and pass it onto HMRC every quarter, this is a tax on profits which is passed along the business process until we, the end user, pays for it.

Corporation tax – this is a tax on business profits.  The richest companies pay handsomely for tax advice to establish detailed tax saving strategies, these strategies can involve moving monies abroad to offshore companies or to other group companies in different countries where the corporate tax rates are lower.  As corporation tax is a tax on profits it can be open to abuse, by recalculating this as a "turnover tax" the tax planning advice will be extremely limited.

Relax restrictions on personal use tobaco from Europe

I am a smoker and travel to Belgium every 6 months to buy my tobaco at 1/3rd. the price of UK every time I do this I have to suffer interogation from HMC&E and made to feel like a criminal.

There is no problem with French border control on leaving the UK and entering France so why should there be a problem on re-entering my own Country. I am white, British and 66 years old. I have worked (without benefits) all my life without interuption and paid all taxes.

My Idea:

If taxes on tobaco were reduced in the UK to be more in line with the rest of Europe then there would be no need for me to purchase abroad. The UK would then benefit from my spending and there would be no reason for people to purchase abroad. The VAT rate in Belgium is 21% and yet tobaco is 1/3rd. cheaper than UK. Let there be a level playing field.

Make upkeep of the monarchy optional

Why should my taxes go to pay for a  privelleged, useless, narrow minded bunch of people that have not been voted for in a democratic way?

This antiquated, unpopular and shameful system of  rulership bears no releavance to the way that the vast majority of people in the UK live today.

I want to "opt out" of paying for them to continue to live in their lavish, cosseted lifestyle whilst I, like many others, struggle to survive.

Remove all taxes bar income tax and corporation tax

All taxes should be combined into these two items, it will remove a lot of the stealth that is present in our current tax system and give people a fair opportunity to see how much they are paying for the service the government provides.

This obviously would result in an increase in these rates of tax. It would also reduce government income heavily when the goverment causes the ecomony to go into recession and place a huge incentive on them to make keeping the economy stable.

Simplify Tax, Reduce Administration and Target Consumerism

Two types of tax only are required- (i) Consumer tax and (ii) Financial (export) Tax.

(i)  Only consumption results in deterioriation of society's infrastructure, pollution and waste.  Therefore all consumption should be taxed as a means of funding the cost of such activities.

(ii)  To safeguard the nation against loss of assets, tax the monetary value of goods and money taken overseas.  This does not include export of goods which result in a net income to the UK.

As income, interest and bank balance, etc do not in their own right create damage, polution, etc these do not need to be taxed as there are no national costs arising.

Make the Tax System Simpler!

I don't understand why the tax system has to be so complicated, you have income tax, council tax, national insurance contributions as well as tons more "direct" & "indirect" taxes. Whilst HMRC has done a great job with their new self assesment online system it still is far to complicated, especially for those of us with small businesses.
