Remove restrictions on ‘undertaking’ on motorways

Allow traffic to overtake on the left on motorways / multi-lane highways, subject to normal overtaking rules about it being safe to do so and not cutting in.

Why does this matter?

Drivers should be free to proceed in any lane where it is safe to do so.

Several counties allow overtaking on either side, which enables all lanes to be used to their full capacity and removes incentives for inconsiderate rivers to ‘hog’ the middle / right lanes.

  1. Better to prosecute those who do not keep to the left when not overtaking.

I agree with Phil, slow right-hand lane hogs hold up both lanes!

  3. B A Jenner says:

Might be OK but when first introduced, as drivers would not expect undertaking to occur, the undertaken driver. would be more likely to pull over to the left as the undertaker was passing.(causing a crash)

totally bad idea. as a driver of a large vehicle where duel carridge ways or motorways merge vehicles find themselves in the middle lane and have to move over into the left lane. if the vehicles merging and using the left lane overtake on the left the large vehicle cannot see them because they are not in line of sight in the mirror of the large vehicle.

  5. Peter Hucker says:

I already do this and have never caused a problem. People check their mirror before moving left, so they see you. If they’re hogging a lane, they probably won’t move anyway. It’s high time we let motorists think for themselves.
